Is Carrie Underwood Similar to 'Nashville' Character?

Carrie Underwood isn't thrilled with comparisons to Juliette Barnes, the fictional country star played by Hayden Panettiere on Nashville. Panettiere has said that her Golden Globe-nominated performance was inspired by Underwood, one of the highest-charting country artists of all time at age 29. But beyond the blonde hair and Nashville twang, Underwood says she doesn't see the resemblance.

Canada sending C-17 transport plane to help allies in Mali

Canada will provide one RCAF C-17 transport aircraft in a non-combat role to support the operations of its allies in Mali for a week, the Harper government has announced.

"We are responding to a request from our French friends for logistical assistance in the form of heavy-lift [aircraft]. I have, in consultation with the minister of national defence and the minister of foreign affairs, granted that assistance for a period of one week," Prime Minister Stephen Harper told reporters at an announcement Monday afternoon in Montreal.

"We will obviously, after a few days, analyze how that is going and talk with our allies, but this is intended to be of a short duration," the prime minister said.

"We think that is an appropriate role for Canada, given our relative capacities and interests," he said.

Opposition Leader Tom Mulcair said Canada is sending "mixed signals" and should be working through the United Nations on Mali.

"It is a United Nations decision first and foremost," Mulcair told reporters in Toronto. "We've been getting mixed signals from the Conservatives. We approve the sending of the C-17 to help in the delivery of material, helping the French, but we also think we have to send clear signals to our [UN] partners and that we're consistent on questions like Mali."

Decision anticipated in tweet

Harper's announcement was previewed in a Sunday tweet from Mali's president, Dioncounda Traor?, who said that the United States, Great Britain and Canada are announcing their "support/logistical assistance" as the French military continues to fight the insurgency led by the al-Qaeda-linked extremists in Mali.

Initially, it was unclear what this tweet could be referring to. While the other two countries had moved over the weekend to announce specific support measures for the airstrikes in the former French colony, Canada's on-the-record support for countering the insurgency before today had been only verbal.

The government release issued late Monday morning said the French request received today was for "heavy-lift aircraft to assist in the transport of equipment into the Malian capital of Bamako, a location that is not part of any active combat zone."

"Ultimately, while I congratulate the French for their initiative, as I think the resolution [2085] of the United Nations Security Council itself has recognized, there really has to be significant African participation and African-led participation to make such a mission successful," Harper told reporters in Montreal.

Harper noted that all the permanent members of the Security Council supported the resolution, which resulted from, as he described it, a "serious situation in northern Mali where there are large territory now occupied by essentially terrorist entities who are looking to expand their influence throughout Africa."

"At no time will Canadian Armed Forces members be participating in direct action against insurgent forces in Mali," the prime minister's morning statement said.

The United Nations Security Council was to meet at 3 p.m. ET in New York to discuss the conflict.

Military intervention previously ruled out

During a joint news conference with the chair of the African Union in Ottawa last Tuesday, Prime Minister Stephen Harper appeared to have ruled out Canadian military intervention.

"The government of Canada is not considering a direct Canadian military mission," he told reporters. "Obviously, we are providing humanitarian aid to this region, which is important. And we are consulting with, and working with, and will continue diplomatically with, our allies in the west, and obviously with our friends in Africa, on ways that we can be of assistance."

A Foreign Affairs spokeswoman said Monday there are approximately 240 registered Canadians in Mali, and the department has been in touch with them directly to encourage them to leave the country. The department is advising against travel to the region, citing the the threat of "terrorism, banditry and kidnapping" in northern Mali and suggesting Canadians already there register at DFAIT's website, travel.gc.ca.

The department said Canadians needing emergency consular assistance should contact the Canadian Embassy in Bamacko at 223 20-21-22-36 or DFAIT's emergency line at 613-996-8885, or email sos@international.gc.ca.

Canada froze its foreign aid to Mali last March following its coup, but it continues to fund humanitarian assistance through non-governmental organizations working in that country.

Also prior to the coup, Canada had two military officers stationed at the peacekeeping school in Bamako, Mali's capital, as instructors. They returned home last spring when the insurgency took hold.

Over the Christmas holidays, MacKay suggested Canada was considering a "contribution," potentially in a training role.

But speaking on CBC Radio's The House on Jan. 5, International Co-operation Minister Julian Fantino said that "Canada remains very concerned about the situation in Mali, and we have not, do not anticipate going there" ? a message reiterated by Harper three days later.

Other countries joining fight

French military forces began an aerial bombing campaign late last week to try to support the weakened Malian military's fight against insurgents with ties with the al-Qaeda terrorist network. France wants to see more African troops join the fight.

On Saturday, several West African nations announced they would send troops as early as today, including at least 500 troops each from Niger, Burkina Faso, Senegal and Nigeria.

The U.S. isn't considering sending ground troops or conducting air strikes of its own, but has offered military drones and is said to be considering a broad range of other options for assistance, including intelligence or limited refuelling support for the French campaign.

British Prime Minister David Cameron has announced two RAF C-17 Globemaster cargo planes were offered to support the French military.

"The development of essentially an entire terrorist region in the middle of Africa is obviously of great concern to everyone in the international community," Harper said last week.

But Thomas Boni Yayi, the president of Benin who is currently the chair of the nations in the African Union, said at the same press conference that "there are also other forces outside the African continent that could contribute to take into account the seriousness of the situation and the resources that are required to implement this."

Mega-Stars: Six Movers and Shakers Who Shoot ... - Franchising.com

By:

Franchising is big. And so are some of its franchisees. Just take a look at our "Mega 99" list (page 54) and you'll see what we mean! We've ranked the heavyweights by size, brands, number of units, and locations. These franchisees definitely know how to Go Big!

Franchising at this level is not for everyone. It takes a certain set of skills, drive, and initiative to build and operate these large organizations. The risks and rewards to the ever-growing multi-unit franchisee hinge on savvy decision-making, dedicated managers, hard-working employees, and loyal customers. Few can do it; even fewer can do it well.

And beyond the numbers are the human stories of passion, creativity, and sheer will and determination it takes to succeed at this level. Year after year we continue to find multi-unit franchisees with compelling stories to tell about their journeys to where they are today, stories filled with dramatic twists and turns.

This year we have chosen six successful multi-unit operators who exhibit the best of franchising, entrepreneurship, and commitment to their goals. It's revealing to hear their candid reflections on their successes and failures, goals and objectives, plans for the future, and their thoughts about work, family, and life. But perhaps it's their insights into people--from their employees to their customers to the communities they serve--that makes these franchisees notable.

We get it started in this issue by "reconnecting" with three franchisees we've previously profiled:

  • Tony Lutfi has tripled the number of franchise units he operates since last we visited with him three years ago. The MarLu Investment Group CEO and president now has 43 Arby's, 46 Church's Chickens, 21 Jack in the Box, 5 Little Caesars, 5 Sizzlers, and has diversified beyond food with 8 Sears Appliance Showrooms and 6 Sears Hardware & Appliance stores, with more likely ahead.
  • Glenn Mueller is a consummate innovator, and continues to be a beacon for the Domino's Pizza brand. The 57-year-old CEO (chief excellence officer) is Domino's largest franchisee, with 135 locations and an annual payroll topping $25 million. And he's brought several of his family members into the organization.
  • Kelly Saxton is the founder and executive chairman of The Saxton Group, which operates 50 McAlister's Deli and 4 Pinkberry locations. He's been in the food service business for 30 years, and he previously owned more than 50 Mazzio's Pizzas. Like many successful franchisees, he loves to see his employees succeed and believes that's what leads to the ultimate success of the organization.

We also spoke with three more successful multi-unit operators:

  • David Grimaud grew up in the car repair business in his father's Midas shop in Alexandria, La. His passion for electronics led to a degree in electrical engineering, but after starting a career in Dallas he soon realized he liked "being the boss." Today he is president of Grimaud Enterprises, which oversees 93 Precision Tune Auto Care locations from Utah to South Carolina.
  • Tom McDonald spent 20 years traveling the globe as an oil refinery process design engineer. In 1986, during a cross-country trip with his family, a friend in Las Vegas asked him to be a partner in a Burger King and the rest is history. Today the 66-year-old has 35 Burger Kings, 8 Panera Breads, 18 T-Mobile Premium Retail outlets, and 3 Fazoli's.
  • Don Copus grew up in a family of eight in a 900-square-foot home where he learned to work hard, appreciate others, and never give up. Today the Indianapolis native operates 25 Hungry Howie's in Michigan, Indiana, and Utah--and was named the 2012 Hungry Howie's Franchisee of the Year.

Regardless of their background, experience, and training, there's always a fascinating real-life story behind every successful franchise operator. Whether you're a single-unit operator or have dozens of units across several brands, you're sure to find something interesting, educational, and even entertaining in the stories of these successful six multi-unit operators. And maybe even a nugget or two to apply to your business or your personal life.

It's Mega 99 time!

Amazon gets Apple's false advertising claim dismissed from trademark infringement lawsuit

Amazon gets Apple's false advertising claim dismissed from trademark infringement lawsuitIt's been awhile since we last had news from Apple's App Store-based trademark infringement lawsuit against Amazon. Today, Amazon got Apple's claim for false advertising dismissed from that very same case after filing for partial summary judgement. In finding for Amazon, the judge held that Apple failed to identify a single false statement (expressly stated or implied) that Amazon made about the nature, characteristics, or quality of the Amazon Appstore that would deceive customers into thinking it was the same as the Apple App Store -- a legal requirement to establish false advertising under federal law. Not a bad way for Bezos to ring in the new year, eh?

Amid lavish fireworks in Asia, festivities dimmed in US, Europe, India over violence, economy

NEW YORK, N.Y. - As the world rang in 2013 with spectacular fireworks displays and showers of confetti, the spectre of economic uncertainty and searing violence dimmed some festivities and weighed on the minds of revelers hoping for a better year.

"With all the sadness in the country, we're looking for some good changes in 2013," Laura Concannon, of Hingham, Mass., said as she, her husband, Kevin, and his parents joined hundreds of thousands of people who celebrated the new year in Times Square on Monday.

Matias Dellanno, 37, of Buenos Aires, Argentina, stood in the middle of the square with his wife and 3-year-old son. His eyes caught the multicolored lighting illuminating the square just before midnight.

"I feel a completely new hope for 2013," he said. "It can't be any worse than last year, when my business lost clients. It was a rough year for everyone. The new year has to be better!"

Revelers with New Year's hats and sunglasses boasting "2013" packed the streets in the 35-degree cold to count down the first ball drop in decades without Dick Clark, who died in April and was honoured with his name printed on confetti and on one of the crystal panels on the Times Square ball.

Syracuse University student Taylor Nanz, 18, said she and a friend had been standing in Times Square since 1:20 p.m. Monday. They hadn't moved from their spot because "if you leave, you lose your place," she said.

"It's the first time ? and the last time," she said. "Never again."

Security in Times Square was tight, with a mass of uniformed police and plainclothes officers assigned to blend into the crowd. Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly claimed that Times Square would be the "safest place in the world on New Year's Eve," and officers used barriers to prevent overcrowding and checkpoints to inspect vehicles, enforce an alcohol ban and check handbags.

In the state capital of California, a midnight fireworks show was cancelled after a fight at a Sacramento restaurant ended with two people fatally shot and three wounded.

But in Las Vegas, police and about 300 Nevada National Guard troops kept the night peaceful, with only 13 people arrested. Sin City hosted sold-out concerts featuring Beyonce, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Black Keys, and revelers jammed the Strip to watch as seven hotel-casinos unleashed identical eight-minute rooftop fireworks displays at midnight.

The celebrations on the West Coast took place nearly 24 hours after lavish fireworks displays lit up skylines in Sydney, Hong Kong and Shanghai.

In Myanmar, about 90,000 people gathered in a field to watch a countdown for the first time, according to organizers. The reformist government that took office in 2011 in the country, long under military rule, threw its first public New Year's celebration in decades.

In the United Arab Emirates city of Dubai, multicolored fireworks danced up and down the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.

In Rome, Pope Benedict XVI celebrated with a vespers service in St. Peter's Basilica to give thanks for 2012 and look ahead to 2013. He said that despite all the death and injustice in the world, goodness prevails. A man scaled the scaffolding around St. Peter's Square and draped a banner calling on the pope to "Stop Terrorism."

In Russia, spectators filled Moscow's Red Square as fireworks exploded near the Kremlin. In Rio de Janeiro, revelers dressed head-to-toe in white as dictated by Brazilian tradition flooded onto Copacabana beach for a concert.

In London, the chimes of the clock inside the Big Ben tower counted down the final seconds of 2012 and fireworks dazzled the sky above Parliament Square. Streamers shot out of the London Eye wheel and blazing rockets launched from the banks of the River Thames.

But parts of Europe held scaled-back festivities and street parties, the mood was restrained ? if hopeful ? for a 2013 that is projected to be a sixth straight year of recession amid Greece's worst economic crisis since World War II.

Festivities were cancelled across New Delhi, the Indian capital, amid days of mourning and reflection about women's safety after a rape victim died on Saturday.

In Times Square, some revelers checked their cellphones for news of lawmakers' tentative deal to skirt the so-called fiscal cliff, a combination of expiring tax cuts and spending cuts that threatened to reverberate globally. The U.S. Senate approved a bill to avert the cliff well after midnight, though a vote in the House was pending Tuesday or Wednesday.

The recent elementary school massacre in Newtown, Conn., and the devastation from Superstorm Sandy also mingled amid the memories of 2012.

"This has been a very eventful year, on many levels," Denise Norris said as she and her husband, the Rev. Urie Norris, surveyed the Times Square crowd waiting for the countdown show with Ryan Seacrest as host.

Seacrest remembered Clark and his legacy, saying it was one that would be continued, and that Clark himself had told him: "Seacrest, the show must go on."

Yvonne Gomez, 53, a physician from Grand Forks, N.D., glowed as she and her husband, 63-year-old potato farmer Gregg Halverson, took in the festivities in New York.

"I couldn't begin the new year in a more beautiful way," she said. "I married him two weeks ago and here we are in the middle of Times Square celebrating the new year ? two widowers who found each other."

For Elvis Rivera, of Manhattan, who stopped by Times Square to take photos, 2012 a death and job losses in his family. How did he feel about its end?

"Relieved," Rivera said.

Game Over: Zynga Shuts Down PetVille And 10 Other Titles To Cut ...

Executing the?cost-reduction plan CEO Mark Pincus announced in November, Zynga has shut down, pulled from the app stores, or stopped accepting new players to 11 games, with some turning off today. The gaming giant will reallocate resources to more successful titles as well as creating new ones. Along with layoffs, the shutdowns are part of the hard road to recovery for Zynga.

The San Francisco-based company had overextended itself. During its heyday on Facebook it built dozens of games, then aggressively launched mobile games as smartphones gained popularity. It didn?t seem like a problem when the company was preparing for a big IPO.

But Zynga?s share price got decimated over the past year. Investors feared it had become bloated, free virality on Facebook had been curtailed, competitors were proliferating, and the shift of Facebook users to mobile from Zynga?s stronghold on the desktop canvas would break the company. Zynga?s share price is down 3.52 percent to $2.33 from its $10 IPO price a year ago.

To get the company back on track, Zynga announced a deep set of cost-cutting measures, including laying off over 100 employees, closing offices, ceasing to renew deals with contractors, shutting down 13 titles, and significantly reducing investment in The Sims-style game The Ville.

Zynga Shut Down Notice

Now the hammer has dropped on eleven of these games.?Keeping them alive spread engineers, designers, and product teams too thin and cost money Zynga can?t afford anymore.?Those that weren?t shut down or pulled from the app store already no longer accept new sign ups and will stop altogether next month. Here?s the full list:

PetVille ? Shut down December 30th
Mafia Wars 2?- Shut down December 30th
FishVille ? Shut down December 5th
Vampire Wars ? Shut down December 5th
Treasure Isle ? Shut down December 5th
Indiana Jones Adventure World ? Closed to new players, shuts down January 14th
Mafia Wars Shakedown ? Pulled from app stores
Forestville ? Pulled from app stores
Montopia ? Shut down December 21st
Mojitomo ? Pulled from app stores
Word Scramble Challenge ? Pulled from app stores

These shutdowns might not seem like a big deal to everyone, but they were near cataclysmic for some players who pumped countless hours and dollars into these games. If you?d spent years tending your virtual aquarium only to have it disappear, you can imagine how disappointed or angry you?d be.?Comments from gamers on the shutdown notices included things like ?my daughter is heartbroken? and ?Please don?t remove petville. I been playing for 4 yrs. and I?M going to miss my pet Jaime?.why do you want cause depression for me and others. Why do you want to kill my pet??

To numb the pain and try to get gamers hooked on titles that will keep running, Zynga offered people who played FishVille, Adventure World, and some other titles a free bonus package of virtual goods in one of its flagship games?CastleVille, ChefVille, FarmVille 2, Mafia Wars, or YoVille.

Though it may seem like a mass culling, Zynga will still have over 30 titles available across Facebook, Zynga.com, iOS, Android, Myspace, and other social sites.

The fact is that if Zynga wants to save these games, keep the rest of its workforce employed, and get its share price growing, it had to cut deadweight. While dead pooling 11 games was surely tough, it?s better than Pincus freezing up as the ship sinks. The teams from these games could help Zynga produce and publish more titles like Horn, a mobile adventure Zynga co-released with Phosphor that Appolicious named the best mobile game of 2012.

Sometimes you have to put old dogs to sleep.
