With charts and charm, Paul Ryan aims to steady a shaken ticket

VANDALIA, Ohio (Reuters) - Trailing in the must-win state of Ohio, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney asked his running mate Paul Ryan to meet him here this week.

After 24 days apart, Romney and Ryan reunited on an airport tarmac on Tuesday amid grumbling from some Republicans that the campaign has grown complacent, leaving Ryan, its strongest advocate, off the national stage.

"Wow, that's quite a guy, Paul Ryan," Romney shouted to the crowd. "Isn't that something?"

Romney's many conservative critics share that assessment.

Weeks ahead of the November 6 general election, Romney is trying to lash his fortunes to the energetic congressman, admired by Republicans for his financial mastery and straight talk.

Those efforts could prove too little, too late. On the trail, Ryan has become an enthusiastic champion for Romney, deploying charts and populist charm. But the man at the bottom of the ticket is not lifting the one at the top.

POWERPOINT CANDIDATE

With early voting underway in 30 states, Romney is struggling with dropping polls, the release of a secretly recorded video in which he condemned nearly half of Americans as dependents on government who view themselves as victims, and a shifting foreign policy landscape that does not play to his strengths as an economic Mr. Fix-It.

Against those odds, Ryan is traveling through Ohio and other politically divided "swing" states that will largely decide the election, lauding Romney's credentials and mocking his opponent, Democratic President Barack Obama.

During the past week, Ryan's argument has taken a new shape, as the campaign has used the U.S. House Budget Committee chairman to rebut the widely held notion - even among Republicans - that Romney has run a vague campaign, unburdened by details.

Last Saturday Ryan delivered a PowerPoint presentation on rising government deficits and U.S. debt obligations, the focus of his stump speech.

During his classroom-style lectures, Ryan returns to the same pose, placing his left hand on his hip, raising his prominent brow, and biting his lower lip, as if to say of Obama's handling of the economy, "Can you believe this guy?"

Ryan's description of budget horrors and debt nightmares is intended to leave crowds believing that he is a teller of hard truths, a break from Romney's reputation as a waffler.

"It's not what you want to hear. It's the truth," said Ken Warner, 50, a software engineer from South Dayton, Ohio, after hearing Ryan speak on Tuesday.

FIGHTING THE DWEEB FACTOR

Ryan, 42, is seen as a natural campaigner and savvy populist, with an average-guy demeanor that Romney has never worn well.

During the Republican primary campaign, Romney memorably serenaded a crowd at a retirement community with a rendition of "America the Beautiful," which later became the soundtrack of a derisive ad by the Obama campaign.

In Colorado Springs, Colorado, on Wednesday, Ryan appeared after country crooner Lee Greenwood sang to the crowd.

"You know, I thought I wouldn't give a speech. I'm just going to sing. You OK with that? Just kidding. I would lose every vote here if I tried that," he said.

Ryan is quick on his feet. Romney often is not.

As a woman recovered from a fainting spell at a rally in Fort Collins, Colorado, on Wednesday, Ryan seized the moment to attack Obama's healthcare policies.

"Good thing she has a good healthcare system to go to, if she needs it today," he said.

The campaign is eager to play up Ryan's hunting background, fighting off any whiff that a man so enthusiastic about PowerPoint slides is a dweeb.

On Tuesday Ryan made an arranged visit to a Bass Pro Shop in a suburb of Cincinnati, purchasing hunting gear for his 10-year-old daughter.

As Ryan walked past camouflage jackets and toward a display of crossbows, Ryan asked reporters, "Is this your first time in archery, guys?"

?ONE CAMPAIGN'

There is little that Ryan's team can do to correct Romney's performance on the campaign trail.

Vice presidential nominees have little impact on the decisions made at headquarters, said Republican strategist Dave Carney, who traveled in 1996 with Jack Kemp, the last Republican vice presidential candidate to run against a Democratic incumbent.

"You're really not there," Carney said. "You don't have a chance to participate that much."

A Ryan campaign aide disputed that characterization, saying, "There's constant communication between the folks on Paul Ryan's plane, the folks on the governor's plane, and the folks in Boston," where the Romney campaign is based.

"Paul Ryan talks to the governor most every day, senior campaign officials every day. It is one campaign."

As to whether there's frustration in the Ryan camp about the state of the Romney campaign, the aide said, "The name on the top of the ticket is Governor Romney. That's just the way it is."

'RUB OFF ON MITT'

According to a Reuters/Ipsos poll released this week, Ryan appears to have had little influence on the presidential race.

Among political independents, the sliver of voters who could sway the election, 18 percent felt more favorable toward the Republican ticket and 13 percent felt less so.

These numbers provide ammunition for Republicans who think Romney isn't using Ryan well.

Speaking to a radio host last week, Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker said, "They not only need to use him out on the trail more effectively. They need to have more of him to rub off on Mitt."

The campaign's turn to foreign policy hasn't benefited Ryan either. He jokes at nearly each stop that because he lives in Wisconsin, which borders Lake Superior, Canada is what comes to mind when he thinks "overseas."

Aides say Ryan is having an impact. They point to splashy headlines like the one that ran this week in the Fort Collins Coloradoan, as evidence that he is generating positive coverage where he campaigns.

But Ryan's soft polling numbers undermine the claim that he was such a bold pick from the start, the kind that would alter the course of the election.

Despite Ryan's prominence in Washington, where he has spent the last two decades, there are plenty of places where he is not a household name.

"I had never heard of him before," said Kay Mahaffey, a retired nurse, at Ryan's recent stop in Lima, Ohio.

Regardless of the outcome on Election Day, the campaign ensures that Ryan will no longer go quite so unrecognized outside of Washington.

"He'll be one of the new big leaders in the party," said Scott Pucket, 42, a Colorado State Patrol trooper, who heard Ryan speak in Fort Collins, Colorado, on Wednesday. "Whatever happens."

Why Is Romney Campaigning on Medical Quackery?

ticks A close up of an adult female, an adult male, nymph and larva ticks. Ticks do cause Lyme disease, which is treatable with antibiotics, but some doctors prescribe mega-doses of antibiotics to patients who they say suffer from "chronic Lyme disease."

Let?s play doctor. A patient comes to you with joint pain, difficulty concentrating, anxiety, poor attention, and mood swings. You might run a series of tests to rule out a persistent infection or other disorder. If your patient lives in a tick- and Lyme-disease-infested area, you would be wise to test for the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi and, if detected, prescribe a course of antibiotics. But suppose the tests come back negative and there is little evidence that your patient was bitten by a tick or was infected with the Lyme disease bacterium. If you are a good doctor, and you are, you might explore a diagnosis of depression, a disease that afflicts almost 10 percent of the population at any given time.

If you are a doctor who believes that the CDC and NIH have misrepresented carefully vetted clinical trial data about the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease, however, you might diagnose your patient with chronic Lyme disease and prescribe an intensive, long-term, side-effect-laden, mega-dose of antibiotics.

And who would be the biggest supporter of your and your patient?s right to pursue a worth-testing-but-found-wanting treatment? Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan.

A Weekly Standard tipper sent in a campaign mailer from northern Virginia titled: ?Romney-Ryan: Doing More To Fight the Spread of Lyme Disease.? It?s a little more tightly focused than most campaign mailers, maybe, but I admire them for thinking about the local angle: The D.C. suburbs are filthy with ticks, and Lyme disease and other tick-borne illnesses are a huge public health problem.

But the details are delicious. The mailer promises that Romney and Ryan will:

IMPROVE SYNERGY
Ensure that government agencies have an open line of communication and work with patients, researchers, doctors, and businesses in an objective, comprehensive manner.

SUPPORT TREATMENT
Encourage increased options for the treatment of Lyme Disease and provide local physicians with protection from lawsuits to ensure they can treat the disease with the aggressive antibiotics that are required.

Here?s a translation: Forget the science, just channel your legitimate fear of a dangerous disease and your misguided fear of the medical establishment into a vote for us.

As a Slate story pointed out years ago, chronic Lyme disease?not the persistent effects of a long-term bacterial infection but a collection of mysterious symptoms?has powerful supporters. Advocates for the diagnosis tend to blame the medical establishment for not taking them seriously enough. In 2008, the attorney general of Connecticut investigated the Infectious Diseases Society of America, a 50-year-old organization with more than 9,000 physician and scientist members, for misrepresenting the science of Lyme disease.? Not to be outdone, Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell assembled a governor?s task force on Lyme disease. He appointed Michael Farris as its chair. Ferris is a lawyer and the chancellor of Patrick Henry College, aka God?s Harvard, whose motto is ?For Christ and for Liberty? and whose ?Statement of Faith? holds that the ?Bible in its entirety? is ?inerrant.?. The school isn?t known for its biology department.

The task force?s report (PDF) makes some reasonable suggestions. People should be warned about the dangers of ticks. They should shower and do a tick-check after walking in tick habitat. We should shoot more deer. But the task force seems to have bought into the conspiracy theory that the infectious disease establishment is maliciously interfering with proper treatment. It states: ?There is no scientific basis for concluding that 30 days or less of antibiotics is sufficient treatment for every case of Lyme disease.? Again, tell it to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Another treatment point is telling: ?We received substantial testimony from lay witnesses that they had been successfully treated with long-term antibiotics.? Pro tip: the plural of anecdote is not data. Just because someone signed up to address a public portion of the task force meeting does not mean their understanding or explanation of their own medical care is accurate or relevant.

I don?t mean to make fun of people who are suffering from what they think is chronic Lyme disease. Their symptoms are real, and they deserve help. But giving them a phantom diagnosis and making them part of a crusade to bring truth to medicine just perpetuates the idea that the symptoms they describe must be part of a complex, classic disease. It?s much more likely to be depression, and depression is treatable. As the CDC gently points out, mentioning other diagnoses that have been favorite catch-alls, ?Your doctor may want to treat you in ways similar to patients who have fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue syndrome. This does not mean that your doctor is dismissing your pain or saying that you have these conditions. It simply means that the doctor is trying to help you cope with your symptoms using the best tools available.?

Disregarding my own advice about not taking an anecdote as data, I have my own story about chronic Lyme disease. A friend of one of my brothers had been suffering for years from headaches, fatigue, a sense of despair, a belief that she wasn?t worthy of her job or her boyfriend. She was diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease and was treated with antibiotics, which were ineffective. What she wasn?t treated for, and could have been, was severe depression. She killed herself.

Listen up, Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan, and Bob McDonnell: Medical research and treatment save lives. Please do not perpetuate a mistrust of them in vulnerable, confused people.

--> Thinking about starting a roleplay, but don't have the idea completely finished? Post it here, not in the main OOC forum!
Did the subject title catch your interest or are you simply curious? Either way, I'm very glad that you've stopped by this thread. I've been tossing around this idea for a while now but I don't want to put effort into something no one is interested in, catch my drift? This idea was inspired by both the Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot (as well as the Disney movies based on it) and Axis Powers: Hetalia. I'm actually not even sure if it's been done here; however, I think it might be fun to try. I've actually been typing up a plot but I don't want to finalize anything until I'm positive others will be interested. The basic plot is this: a roleplay game set in a modern AU Earth where monarchies still govern. I won't divulge too much into why it continues to be this way but the monarchies will hold a great amount of power and influence over their countries. The roleplay is meant to focus on the children of current rulers. After all, everyone needs an heir to the throne yes? The playable characters will be the sons and daughters of those currently on the thrones. How will they meet when they are all living around the world? Simple. They will attend a school together! Located in a neutral territory that is not ruled by a monarchy but a democracy (the United States), the royals will be forced to interact with one another (most likely using English to prevent language barriers) and bonds will be made. Of course relationships will be tested, enemies formed, and alliances created. Perhaps from grade school to University? That is, unless, a royal decides to continue their education in their respective country. It might seem like a dull and drab school roleplay but I've actually jotted down some good ways to keep it alive and active. Some of those being: school events such as Student Council elections, festivals, a possible raid on the school by a group against the monarchies and all they stand for, assasination attempts, wars between countries where others are forced to choose sides, and daily tasks sent via PM that a character must accomplish. (I will be sending tasks at random and your character should follow through with it for develop. The tasks can range to something silly to something that will cause mass drama to ensue.) I'm aiming to make this roleplay last for a long time so I'd need some active and dedicated roleplayers. I won't ask for essays when posting (a paragraph or two is just fine with me) but I do want literate players.

Erm, I feel like I rambled. Haha. Any way, if you're interested then let me know through this thread? Also, I might make the school the royals attend a school that allows commoners and servants enter as well. The commoners either rich enough to attend or smart enough to warn a scholarship and the servants coming alongside their respective royal. I will also use dorm rooms...maybe inspired by Harry Potter where students are placed in a specific dorm based on their personality (determined by a test in the beginning of the school year).

Nigeria forces say kill two Islamist commanders

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (Reuters) - Nigerian security forces fighting the Boko Haram Islamist sect in the northeast of the country said on Friday they had killed two commanders from the group and arrested eight other members in two separate incidents.

The sect has killed hundreds in attacks on security forces, government offices and churches since launching an uprising in 2009 with the aim of carving out an Islamic state.

Agents from the secret service stopped a car at a check point on the outskirts of Maiduguri on Wednesday and the occupants opened fire on them, said Lieutenant Colonel Sagir Musa, spokesman for joint military and police forces in the northeastern city.

He said security forces returned fire and killed the commanders.

"The two sect members were top commanders coordinating the sect activities in Mubi and Yola, in Adamawa and Yobe states," Musa said, adding that in a separate incident in Maiduguri eight Boko Haram suspects were arrested.

The details could not be independently verified and there was no immediate response from Boko Haram, which is based in Maiduguri.

Nigeria's biggest security threat, Boko Haram has managed large-scale, damaging assaults, including one in January where at least 186 people died in coordinated attacks in Kano, the north's biggest city.

This week, authorities said they had killed the sect's spokesman Abu Qaqa and another senior commander while members of Boko Haram were suspected of killing a former top prison warder and the attorney general Borno state, of which Maiduguri is the capital.

It remains unclear if the loss of Qaqa will significantly weaken the sect or if it was indeed him.

Nigerian forces have previously claimed to have killed or captured him only for the militant to subsequently issue a statement denying it. No statement has been issued this week.

UK judge says Litvinenko inquest to open in 2013

LONDON (AP) ? A long-awaited inquest into the poisoning death of former Russian agent Alexander Litvinenko should consider whether Russian authorities were involved, the senior British judge who will oversee it said Thursday. But the U.K. government will not let lawyers for the victim's family and the suspects see a report on alleged links between Litvinenko and British intelligence.

Litvinenko's family believes the Kremlin was behind his death from radioactive poisoning in London in November 2006. The former security service officer, a critic of the Kremlin, died after drinking tea laced with the rare radioactive isotope polonium-210 at a London hotel.

On his deathbed, he accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of responsibility.

Ben Emmerson, a lawyer for Litvinenko's widow Marina, told a court hearing that it was vital that the inquest investigate "the criminal role of the Russian state."

Emmerson said that if official Russian involvement was proved, it would constitute "an act of state-sponsored nuclear terrorism on the streets of London."

Judge Robert Owen, who will lead the inquest, said its scope would be decided at a later hearing, but indicated he was inclined to agree it should look at Russia's alleged role.

Owen said it was "to be regretted" that no inquest has been held in the nearly six years since the Litvinenko died. Owen said he would open his inquest as early in 2013 as possible.

The killing cast a pall over U.K.-Russian relations that still persists. British prosecutors have accused two Russians, Alexander Lugovoi and Dmitry Kovtun, of killing Litvinenko, but Russia refuses to hand them over. Lugovoi is now a Russian lawmaker.

Lawyer Hugh Davies, the inquest's counsel, said the judge-led inquiry should be a "full and fearless" examination of all the facts.

But he said some evidence will be withheld at the request of the British government.

Davies said all interested parties, including lawyers for the Litvinenko family, Lugovoi and the British government, would be given a police report into Litvinenko's death before the inquest begins. One section, however, will be censored - the results of police inquiries into whether Litvinenko was in contact with Britain's MI6 intelligence service.

Davies said the judge and the inquiry's lawyers had seen the full report. The redaction "should not be taken as indicating one way or another" whether Litvinenko had dealings with British spies.

The judge set another pre-inquest hearing for Nov. 2.

In Britain, an inquest is held to determine the facts whenever someone dies unexpectedly, violently or in disputed circumstances. Inquests do not determine criminal liability.

Outside court, Marina Litvinenko she was confident she would get justice from the inquest.

"I'm not a politician, I'm a woman who lost her husband and I want to know what happened," she said.

Lenovo axes Android App Shop, points you in the direction of Google Play

Lenovo axes Android App Shop

Business-types, Lenovo pondered, needed their own App Store Shop, dedicated to selling business-only applications to those strutting around looking serious in their polyester suits. It seems that such demand never materialized, however, with the company shuttering the outlet only six months after its launch and pointing users in the direction of Google Play instead. While the bulk of the apps purchased in that time will still work, around 90 that used the store's license management system will cease to function on November 2nd, a list of which you can find at the source link.

[Thanks, Hemal]

Syrian air strike kills at least 54: activists

BEIRUT (Reuters) - At least 54 people were killed when a jet fighter blew up a fuel station amid heavy fighting between government and rebel forces in northern Syria on Thursday, a British-based monitoring group said.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which has a network of activists across Syria reporting on government violence during the 18-month-old revolt, cited an activist in al-Raqqa province as saying more than 110 people were dead or wounded.

A video published by activists, said to be from al-Raqqa, showed black clouds of smoke rising from the wreckage of the petrol station as bewildered residents examined the scene following the attack by an air force jet.

Government forces shelled rebels near a border crossing with Turkey some 30 km (18 miles) away on the northern fringes of al-Raqqa, a day after it was seized by the insurgents.

A Reuters witness on the Turkish side of the border heard heavy gunfire and explosions close to the Tel Abyad border post, where an opposition flag still fluttered. Residents rushed towards the border as the gunfire intensified.

It was impossible to verify the authenticity of the activists' video, and most foreign journalists are barred entry into Syria, making accounts of events difficult to confirm.

President Bashar al-Assad has used helicopters and fighter jets against areas where insurgents have been operating, including residential districts of the capital and other cities.

Assad's forces have targeted petrol stations in rural towns and villages and along main roads to deprive rebels of fuel. Civilians have set up smaller, discreet fuel outlets.

In comments to Egyptian magazine Al-Ahram Al-Araby, published in its Friday edition, Assad said "the armed groups exercise terrorism against the state. They are not popular within society ... they will not be victorious in the end".

But he added that the "door to dialogue remains open". "Change cannot be achieved through foreign intervention," he said.

Activists say more than 27,000 people have been killed in a conflict which began with peaceful street protests that provoked a harsh military crackdown and mushroomed into civil war. Last month was the bloodiest yet.

Earlier on Thursday, Syria's information ministry said a Syrian military helicopter that crashed near the capital had clipped the tail of a Syrian Arab Airlines passenger plane, but the 200 people on board escaped unharmed.

"The helicopter struck the tail of the plane ... The control tower at Damascus airport confirmed that the plane landed safely at Damascus airport and all 200 passengers are in good health," a statement published on the state news channel Syria TV said.

REBELLIOUS DAMASCUS DISTRICT RAIDED

On the ground, security forces surrounded and raided a rebellious southern district of Damascus, arresting more than 100 people, and activists said several others were shot dead.

An opposition activist called Abu Salam, who lives in the Yarmouk district where rebels have been hiding out in recent days, told Reuters many residents were trapped.

He said tanks and soldiers had sealed all the entrances and hundreds of soldiers were searching the area on foot and on trucks mounted with heavy machineguns.

"We are hiding in our homes. I am afraid to leave the house so I am sitting here waiting to see if they reach my street, if I will be arrested or shot dead," he said, adding that two men and a young woman were shot dead when soldiers saw them running out of a park on Thursday morning.

He said another five rebels found hiding were executed.

A resident who toured Yarmouk a day earlier said rebel fighters, flushed out of surrounding districts, had moved into a southern section of the district and came under intense army bombardment overnight.

Assad has long maintained that foreign-backed militants have been leading the revolt.

State media said soldiers had killed 100 Afghan "terrorists" in the city of Aleppo. Rebels dismissed that, saying the district of Bustan al-Qasr - where the attack supposedly took place - had not been entered by Assad's troops.

DIVIDED WORLD CANNOT HALT VIOLENCE

Iran and Russia back Assad, while the United States and European allies want him toppled but have shrunk from intervening in a conflict steeped in ethnic and sectarian rivalries that could spill over borders and inflame the wider Middle East.

Iraq denied on Thursday a Western intelligence report that Iranian aircraft and trucks had transported weapons and military personnel through Iraq to Syria to help Assad and Belarus denied trying to sell weapons to Syria.

"Iraq has confirmed that it will never be involved or helping or allowing any shipment via its air space or land to Syria," Iraqi government spokesman Ali al-Dabbagh told Reuters.

The allegation, reported by Reuters on Wednesday, said arms transfers were organized by the Islamic Revolutionary Guards.

Syria's upheaval is a political headache for Iraq's Shi'ite Muslim-led government. Close to Assad's ally, Shi'ite Iran, Baghdad has resisted joining Western and Gulf Arab calls for the authoritarian leader, whose family has ruled for 42 years, to bow out while also calling for a reform process in Syria.

Baghdad's core concern is that a precipitous fall of Assad would fracture Syria along sectarian lines and yield a hostile, hardline Sunni Muslim regime that could stir up Iraq's combustible Sunni-Shi'ite communal mix.

Belarus denied trying to sell weapons to Syria and violating a U.N. Security Council resolution after the United States imposed sanctions on a Belarussian state-owned firm.

"All the accusations of the American side ... have no basis and are untrue," a spokesman said.

The Syrian rebels are being armed by Sunni Muslim states including Saudi Arabia and receive other supplies and diplomatic support from Western powers and Turkey.

New screening method identifies 1,200 candidate refrigerants to combat global warming

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? Researchers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have developed a new computational method for identifying candidate refrigerant fluids with low "global warming potential" (GWP) -- the tendency to trap heat in the atmosphere for many decades -- as well as other desirable performance and safety features.

The NIST effort is the most extensive systematic search for a new class of refrigerants that meet the latest concerns about climate change. The new method was used to identify about 1,200 promising, low-GWP chemicals for further study among some 56,000 that were considered. Only about 60 of these have boiling points low enough to be suitable for common refrigeration equipment, an indication of how difficult it is to identify usable fluids.

The ongoing NIST project is a response to U.S. industry interest in a new generation of alternative refrigerants that already are required for use in the European Union.

The refrigerants now used in cars and homes are mainly hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs). They were adopted a generation ago in the effort to phase out chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), which deplete the stratospheric ozone layer. An example is R-134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane), which replaced ozone-depleting chemicals in automobile air conditioners and home refrigerators. R-134a now is being phased out in Europe because HFCs remain in the atmosphere for many years, yielding a high GWP. A compound's GWP is defined as the warming potential of one kilogram of the gas relative to one kilogram of carbon dioxide. R-134a has a GWP of 1,430, much higher than the GWP of 150 or less now mandated for automotive use in Europe.

Promising low-GWP chemicals include fluorinated olefins, which react rapidly with atmospheric compounds and thus will not persist for long periods.

"What industry is trying to do is be prepared, because moving from a GWP in the thousands or tens of thousands to a GWP of 150 is an enormous challenge, both economically and technologically," says NIST chemist Michael Frenkel. "We decided to leverage the tools NIST has been developing for the last 15 years to look into the whole slew of available chemicals."

The affected industry is huge: The U.S. air conditioning, heating and refrigeration equipment manufacturing industry ships about $30 billion in goods annually, according to the U.S. Bureau of the Census.

NIST has extensive experience evaluating alternative refrigerants, having previously helped the refrigeration industry find replacements for CFCs.

The new NIST method estimates GWP by combining calculations of a compound's radiative efficiency (a measure of how well it absorbs infrared radiation) and atmospheric lifetime, both derived from molecular structure. Additional filtering is based on low toxicity and flammability, adequate stability, and critical temperature (where the compound's liquid and gas properties converge) in a desirable range. The method was applied to 56,203 compounds and identified 1,234 candidates for further study. The method, which was validated against available literature data, is accurate and fast enough for virtual screening applications. The approach is similar to the large-scale virtual screening and computational design methods for discovering new pharmaceuticals.

The screening is the initial stage of a larger study funded by the U.S. Department of Energy. The next step will be to further narrow down the candidates to a couple dozen suitable for detailed investigation in refrigeration cycle modeling.

The Most (and Least) Common PIN Numbers and Numeric Passwords. Is Yours One of Them? [Security]

The Most (and Least) Common PIN Numbers and Numeric Passwords. Is Yours One of Them?Tech consultancy company DataGenetics has analyzed the popularity of numeric passwords. What they found confirms previous research that most of our four-digit PINs (e.g., for credit and debit cards) are way too predictable. Check if yours is one of those mentioned in their report.

The data analysed came from exposed password databases. Data Consultancy filtered the results to just those that were exactly four digits long [0-9] and found nearly 3.4 million four-digit passwords. These are used as a proxy for users' four-digit PIN codes. There are 10,000 possible combinations of digits from 0000 through 9999, and each of those were represented in the dataset.

The Most (and Least) Common PIN Numbers and Numeric Passwords. Is Yours One of Them?So out of the 10,000 possible combinations for four-digit codes, which is the most popular? You guessed it: 1234. An alarming ~11% of the 3.4 million passwords are 1234.

The top 20 passwords account for nearly 27% of the total.

Looking at the list at right, you'll see that the numbers are all familiar, easily predictable patterns, such as 0000, 4321, and 1010.

If you're using the keypad to make a PIN pattern (e.g., 2580 going straight down), chances are hackers can guess that quickly too.

Other high frequency PINs are years and dates (e.g., MMDD).

Expanding the analysis to all-numeric passwords (not just four-digit ones), guess which are the most popular? Yup, 12345 for 5 digits, 123456 for 6 digits, and so on. (Ranked at #17 for the ten-digit password is 3141592654?the first digits of Pi, so that's at least a little more imaginative).

The Most (and Least) Common PIN Numbers and Numeric Passwords. Is Yours One of Them? What about the least popular PINs? At the bottom at #10,000 is 8068?but that's not a great idea for your new PIN now that it's been exposed. The twenty least popular PINs don't appear to have any predictability.

The moral of the story, as with every password topic, is that we're pretty bad at choosing truly random passwords and PINs. In the case of your credit or debit card PIN, having one that's too common would obviously be an issue if a thief steals or finds your wallet, but ATM card skimming also means thieves don't need your physical card to get into your bank account.

If your PIN number is too predictable or popular, see our article on PIN security and how to come up with new numbers that are more secure.
