Artificial Ear Grown on Rat's Back

From artificial eyeballs to limbs, doctors have dreamed up dozens of ways to replace body parts when things go wrong.

Now they can add a new device to their repertoire: a lifelike, flexible ear made from cartilage cells seeded on a titanium scaffold.

The new technique, described July 30 in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface, is better than previous tissue-engineering efforts and could replace a laborious technique that requires plastic surgeons to fashion a crude ear shape out of a lump of cartilage. The procedure could be used in trauma injury patients who have lost an ear or in children with microtia, a congenital ear deformity, said bioengineer Tom Cervantes, who was at Massachusetts General Hospital at the time of the research.

Prosthetic ears

In the race to create bionic humans, ears have been a surprisingly tricky challenge. Numerous artificial ears are in medical use, but most had problems. Ears made from cartilage cells would often shrivel once implanted onto an animal. Prosthetic ears typically weren't very flexible or realistic-looking. And the reigning practice of extracting cartilage from a person's ribs and fashioning it into an ear was laborious and difficult to match with a person's other ear. Recently, researchers reported they had used a 3D printer to create a bioengineered ear. [The Top 5 Weirdest Prosthetics ]

"For something like the ear where it's very cosmetic in nature, having a proper shape is one of the most important requirements. We wouldn't want it to look like a shriveled nub," Cervantes, who is now at Stanford University School of Medicine in California, told LiveScience.

Cervantes and his colleagues wanted to create something that could be customized. The team started with a 3D computer model and used that to create a titanium mesh of the basic ear shape. They then seeded the mesh with cartilage cells that formed their own matrix over the mesh.

To see how the ear would hold up when connected to a blood supply, the team implanted the ear on several rats' backs and studied them for several weeks. Unlike previous attempts, the ear didn't shrivel up nor become deformed.

Because the design is based on a 3D model, there's no reason that a person couldn't have a matching set of symmetrical earlobes based on their own shape, Cervantes said.

"The way we've gone about creating it paves the way for creating patient-specific ear shapes," Cervantes said.

Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade agreement could lead to fewer U.S. jobs

The Morning Call published the recent story about Lehigh Valley businesses hiring at faster pace. This is good news but gains could be lost with the pending Trans-Pacific Partnership free trade agreement. The Trans-Pacific Partnership dwarfs the North American Free Trade Agreement both geographically and economically and could result in serious job and wage loss in our area.

The proposed pact not only covers traditional trade matters such as tariffs and quotas but also is said to contain some 29 separate chapters affecting everything from food safety standards and banking regulations to energy policy and government purchasing decisions.

Despite having completed 18 major rounds of negotiations on that agreement, the Obama administration has refused to tell the American public what it has been proposing in our name, instead classifying all the draft texts. Now the administration wants Congress to pass new fast-track legislation that would enable the partnership to circumvent ordinary congressional review, amendment and debate procedures.

Courts order Apple to end e-books pacts

A digital book is displayed on an Apple Inc. iPad for a photograph in New York. (Scott Eells/Bloomberg) (/)

Apple Inc., the world's biggest technology company, should be ordered to cancel existing agreements with five publishers after a judge's ruling that it conspired to fix prices of electronic books, the Justice Department said Friday.

The federal government and 33 states submitted the proposal in U.S. District Court in Manhattan. They called for a court-appointed antitrust compliance monitor and a requirement that Apple allow competitors to provide links from their e-book applications to their electronic bookstores.

Friday's proposal would require Apple to find a new way to do business with publishers.

"From a financial standpoint, this means nothing for Apple," John Bright, an analyst with Avondale Partners, said in an interview. "But strategically speaking it is a setback. I think Apple would now have to find different work- around solutions for pricing. They would use the same publishers but they would have to negotiate different solutions."

U.S. District Judge Denise Cote, after a nonjury trial in Manhattan, ruled July 10 against Apple. The company now faces another trial on damages. The proposal submitted today needs court approval to become effective.

"Under the department's proposed order, Apple's illegal conduct will cease and Apple and its senior executives will be prevented from conspiring to thwart competition in the future," Bill Baer, the assistant attorney general in charge of the antitrust division, said in a statement.

"The

idea behind this proposal would certainly make the e- book industry more competitive," Bright said. "By definition, increased competitiveness in an industry leads to lower prices."

The U.S. sued Apple and five of the biggest publishers in April 2012, claiming that the technology company pushed publishers to allow it to sell digital copies of their books under a model that raised prices and harmed consumers.

Under that so-called agency model, publishers, not retailers, set book prices, with Apple getting 30 percent.

The publishers ? Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck's Macmillan unit, CBS's Simon & Schuster, Lagardere's Hachette Book Group, Pearson's Penguin unit and News Corp.'s HarperCollins ? settled with the government.

Under the Justice Department plan, the salary and expenses of the proposed external monitor would be paid by Apple. The person would work with an internal antitrust compliance officer who would be hired by and report to the outside directors on Apple's audit committee.

The government's proposal extends to media other than electronic books. It would prohibit Apple from entering agreements with suppliers of music, movies, TV shows and other content if those deals are likely to increase the prices at which their competitors sell them.

Tom Neumayr, a spokesman for Cupertino, Calif.-based Apple, declined to comment on the proposal.

A hearing on the proposal will be held Aug. 9.

12 hurt as car drives into crowd at LA boardwalk

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? A car drove into a packed Saturday early evening crowd walking along the Venice Beach boardwalk in Los Angeles, injuring at least a dozen people, two of them critically.

Multiple witnesses reported that the driver appeared to be in control of the car and it was not moving erratically as it plowed through the crowd, Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

Firefighters were surveying the crowd and looking for anyone who was hurt, Humphrey said.

Twelve injured had been counted so far, with 10 of them hospitalized. Two were hurt seriously and two critically, Humphrey said. He had no details on the identities of the victims or their injuries.

The car, described by witnesses as a sedan or compact, was still moving as it drove out of sight of firefighters and the people who were hit, and it was not clear if the person had stopped or was arrested.

Officers at the LAPD's Pacific Station would give no information on the incident.

The famed Venice boardwalk is a cultural hub in a part of Los Angeles known for its eccentricities. It is home to galleries, restaurants, tattoo shops, skateboard parks and the famous outdoor weight room known as Muscle Beach.

Japan deputy PM rejects resignation calls over Nazi remarks

Japan's gaffe-prone deputy prime minister on Friday rejected calls for his resignation after stoking international condemnation by saying Tokyo could learn from the Nazis' swift overhaul of Germany's constitution.

Taro Aso, who is also Japan's finance minister, added that he had no plan to apologise, as he repeated a day-earlier retraction of his comments which he chalked up to a "misunderstanding".

Responding to criticism from the country's left-leaning opposition parties, Aso told a news briefing that "I have no intention to resign" for the remarks, which riled neighbours China and South Korea and drew a swift rebuke from a US-based Jewish human rights group.

Tokyo has moved to distance itself from Aso's comments on Monday to a conservative think-tank, as Japan mulls a change to its pacifist constitution which was imposed by the United States and its allies in the aftermath of World War II.

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's conservative Liberal Democratic Party has said it wants to upgrade Japan's self-defence forces into a full-fledged military, with some advocates citing the threat of a belligerent North Korea and China's military buildup.

The reform idea has jangled nerves among Japan's regional neighbours who say Tokyo has never come to terms with its own militaristic past, including the brutal 1910-1945 colonisation of the Korean peninsula.

On Monday, Aso pointed to a stealth overhaul of the German constitution which cemented the Nazis' grip on power, as Tokyo faces vocal opposition over its own reform push.

"First, mass media started to make noises and then China and South Korea followed suit," Aso was quoted by Japanese media as saying.

"The German Weimar constitution changed, without being noticed, to the Nazi German constitution. Why don't we learn from their tactics?"

Days later, Aso insisted he had been misunderstood and that he was not praising Nazi leader Adolf Hitler's political prowess, but rather saying constitutional reform should be not be influenced by media criticism or animosity from Japan's neighbours.

Japan and Nazi Germany were allies during WWII.

"It is regrettable that my remarks over the Nazi administration led to a misunderstanding, which was not my intention," Aso said Thursday, as he retracted his comments.

"It is clear from all my remarks that I have an extremely negative view of the events involving the Nazis and the Weimar constitution."

Aso is known for his sometimes clumsy and uncomfortable remarks, including saying earlier this year that elderly people should "hurry up and die" to avoid taxing the country's medical system.

APNewsBreak: Ark.'s Cotton to run for US Senate

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) ? Arkansas Republican Rep. Tom Cotton plans to announce his bid next week to challenge two-term incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor in next year's elections, according to a person familiar with the congressman's plans.

The person who spoke to The Associated Press on Wednesday was not authorized to speak publicly about the planned announcement and spoke on a condition of anonymity. But the freshman congressman has scheduled an event Tuesday with supporters in his hometown of Dardanelle.

Cotton's entry will set up a heated and expensive fight for a U.S. Senate seat that Republicans believe is prime for a pickup in 2014, with groups on the right and left already waging a television ad fight in Arkansas. It also creates a domino effect, with several Republicans now eyeing Cotton's seat in the U. S. House.

Cotton was elected to the U.S. House in 2012, to the open seat formerly held by Democrat Mike Ross. Ross is now running for Arkansas governor.

Cotton, 36, is a former management consultant who served in the Army in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was elected to the 4th District in November, after racking up endorsements during his primary bid from national Republican leaders including U.S. Sen. John McCain of Arizona and conservative groups such as the Club for Growth.

The Club for Growth in February launched the first television ad against Pryor, seen by many as a signal that the group would back Cotton's potential candidacy. Other conservative groups said they're prepared to back Cotton's bid.

"Representative Cotton is a conservative leader and rock star candidate. Arkansas is now one of the very top pickup opportunities for Republicans this cycle and we are excited to get engaged in the race on behalf of Rep. Tom Cotton," said Steven J. Law, president and CEO of American Crossroads, a GOP group tied to Republican strategist Karl Rove.

Pryor is viewed by many Republicans as the most vulnerable Senate incumbent next year, especially after recent GOP gains in Arkansas. Republicans in November took over the state Legislature for the first time since Reconstruction and swept all four of the state's U.S. House seats.

Republicans are trying to unseat Pryor and three other Democratic incumbents who represent states that Republican Mitt Romney won in last year's presidential race: Mark Begich of Alaska, Kay Hagan of North Carolina and Mary Landrieu of Louisiana.

Democrats need to defend 21 seats, including seven in largely rural states that Obama lost in 2012.

Republicans need to pick up six seats to regain Senate control.

On Wednesday, Pryor's campaign wasted no time in hitting back, accusing Cotton of alienating constituents on issues ranging from farming to Social Security.

"Instead of putting Arkansas first, he has put his own political career ahead of the people of Arkansas and sided with Washington insiders and special interests," Pryor's campaign manager, Jeff Weaver, said in a statement. "When the people of our state review Tom Cotton's record, they won't like what they see."

Pryor reported in July that he ended the second quarter with nearly $4 million in the bank for his re-election bid. Cotton has $1 million on hand.

Groups on the right and left have already been airing ads throughout the state targeting Pryor. A gun control group founded by New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg has aired spots criticizing the Democratic lawmaker for voting against expanded background checks. Pryor used his first TV spot to defend his vote against the criticism.

Since taking office in January, Cotton has enjoyed a high profile with multiple appearances on national programs such as Meet the Press. Cotton in July wrote a column for the Wall Street Journal opposing Senate immigration legislation.

He's also been targeted by Democrats who viewed him as a likely challenger to Pryor. Two Democratic political action committees, Patriot Majority USA and Senate Majority PAC, launched a $270,000 television ad buy in June attacking Cotton for allegedly seeking the national spotlight at the expense of his district.

Cotton has faced criticism from Democrats for initially opposing the farm bill over objections to the food stamp program. Cotton later voted for a version of the farm bill that did not include funding for food stamps.

Cotton's also come under fire for a recent proposal that would have extended sanctions on Iranian human rights violators to their families ? an idea that has been criticized as eliminating due process. Cotton, who withdrew the proposal, has defended the idea and said it would only apply to sanctions on Iranians, not any American citizens.

Cotton's appeal to conservative activists stems from his resume as a Harvard-educated veteran who's known for his rhetorical flourishes.

When he joined with House Republicans to vote for the federal health overhaul's repeal, he compared the unsuccessful effort to defeat the law to an ancient Roman senator's ongoing call to destroy Carthage. When Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez died in March, Cotton responded with "Sic semper tyrannis," or Latin for "thus always to tyrants." John Wilkes Booth uttered the same after assassinating President Lincoln.

Cotton's candidacy will likely have a domino effect on other races in Arkansas. House Majority Leader Bruce Westerman plans to seek the Republican nomination for Cotton's seat and will formally launch his campaign in August, a person who had spoken to the lawmaker told the AP. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Cotton had not yet formally launched his Senate campaign.

Lt. Gov. Mark Darr has said he'd likely run for Cotton's seat if the congressman ran for Senate. Beth Anne Rankin, who was the party's nominee for the seat in 2010 and lost the primary to Cotton last year, said Wednesday she'd consider running again if Cotton challenges Pryor.

Janis Percefull, a community college teacher, is the only Democrat running for the 4th District seat. State Rep. Jeff Wardlaw said Wednesday he's considering running for the Democratic nomination.
