Rookie firefighter sees own house burn in Colo.

Rookie Firefighter Sees Own House Burn as She Protects Town (ABC News)Rookie firefighter Emily Franklin battled her first blaze this week and among the casualties was her own house.

The fire, one of several wildfires plaguing Colorado, turned her childhood home into cinders and reduced her car to a metal skeleton in the driveway.

"This is my first fire and it was my own home," Franklin, 18, told ABC News."Great way to kick off a career."

Franklin actually watched her own house going up in smoke while working with her colleagues to help save the town from the fire.

The rookie firefighter sprang into action while home and seeing flames spread from house to house in her Estes Park neighborhood, incinerating trees in its wake. She raced around with her garden hose, shouting for neighbors to get out of their houses and turn their hoses on.

Once firefighters arrived, she drove down to the command center with her gear and took assignments dowsing other flames.

"I look through the trees and see fire going under our deck, and I was like, 'I think that's my house,'" She said. "It goes up, and I was like, 'That's my house!"

Still, she kept working, and spent the rest of the day directing traffic and taking other assignments.

The Estes Park fire is one of several wildfires that raging in Colorado. The largest, the Waldo Canyon fire, has destroyed hundreds of home and scorched 18,500 acres despite the efforts of more than 1,000 firefighters trying to bring it under control.

?

Nevertheless, Franklin said she's lucky no one in her family was hurt.

"I guess anything can happen in a matter of 10 minutes," she said. "Getting out was the most important thing, so that's what we did."

She described the firefighters' work as "truly amazing."

"I think without firefighters, the entire town of Estes would be gone," she said.

10 Green and Eco-Friendly Tips For Web Design and Online ...

Since the trends involving pretty much everything in our lives are moving towards being environmentally friendly and conserving our natural resources, I wondered if we could apply some of these green lessons to web design. Ask any project manager and they?ll tell you any web design, programming or application development project has a finite amount of resources behind it (unless, of course, you have an infinite amount of funds $). So I thought I could extend some green ideas towards either saving those resources, or at the least, using them more wisely.

Use Less Fossil Fuel: This is a simple one for any developer involved with your project. Work virtually from home more often and spend less gas.

Use Less Paper: Who even needs a printer anymore? I don?t even have one on my desk.

Hire Local Resources Only: Here?s a no-brainer for anyone who?s tried it before ? don?t use offshore outsourcing! I can?t tell you how many clients come ask me to fix their development project after they?ve spent thousands on some developer in India or China. By using programmers and developers who work locally, you don?t have to worry about language problems or redundant development cycles. Let?s face it ? there simply is no pride in ownership from application code coming out of these emerging economies. It?s bad, it?s buggy, and it just doesn?t work. Local developers are here to stand behind their code, so you benefit by getting a product which both they and you can be proud of and promote. Using local resources also stimulates your own local economy, which of course represents the very same people to which you are trying to sell or market your business!

Sustainable Resources: In terms of green construction, this usually means implementing a renewable energy source such as solar power to sustain your energy. By why not develop websites which can also self-sustain? By using a Content Management System, or CMS, there is no need to continually hire coders or developers to maintain and sustain your website. A CMS will allow you to update your own website content any time you want, on your own schedule.

Recycle: Unless you hire a developer who started working yesterday, every programmer has an arsenal of code which he or she re-uses. Any good ASP.NET or PHP programmer already has a good library of applications which they?ve worked on in the past. Ask your web developer for a discount on a recycled application; if they?re already programmed it before, there?s a very good chance they will extend a discount for re-using a pre-built application which simply has to be customized for your use.

Lifecycle Planning: If you build a green home, you have to make sure it?s not going to fall apart and contaminate the environment in 10 years, so you plan for the inevitable deconstruction of your home. Why not also build the marketing strategy of your website behind a long term goal? Many customers get together a few bucks $, hire a web designer, and put out a website. And then that?s it. There?s no promotion behind it, no SEO, no marketing. So they just sit and wait and inside of two years they have this horribly outdated and obsolete website which no one visits. By working with a web design and marketing team which know how to plan the lifecycle of your efforts, you can extend the life and productivity of your marketing plan ? even the eventual deconstruction of it (i.e., re-design).

Innovation in Design: When building green, the LEED system applies points for innovative design. Why shouldn?t you expect the same from your website designer? So many cheap and offshore web developers today simply rip off a template-based design or just change the colors and re-use old websites to sell clients what they call a ?new? web design. This is one case where recycling is not desirable ? you should always demand a new, original and unique web design, especially if you are paying for a custom web design. Web developers should constantly be striving to innovate design for greater usability and effectiveness; you don?t want someone else?s stale old design.

Incentives: Building developers designing eco-friendly construction now receive up to a 20% bonus for achieving a certification level higher than that required. Why not extend the same incentive to your web design or marketing team? Merit-based pay has an awesome power to motivate. Offer your SEO professional a certain bonus rate if they meet and exceed your expectations. Offer your web marketer an incentive bonus if your site meets and exceeds x amount of $ in sales. By making an incentive partner out of your developer you foster and build a profitable relationship for both of you.

Positive Economic Impact: There are two ways to measure economic impact; direct and indirect. Obviously, whatever it is you are marketing on the internet, you want it to have a positive direct economic impact on you own wallet. Don?t budget $10,000 for a new massive web application to sell $100 sneakers, and then forget to budget for promotion and marketing. In the downstream, this is going to have a negative impact on your sales since you didn?t plan for the eventual marketing expense. And what about indirect impact? Techniques such as linkbaiting and viral marketing can yield amazing rewards, even though they employ indirect marketing techniques.

Social Impact: In green terms, this equates to culture and quality of life; contributing to a positive quality of life for current and future generations. But in the end, isn?t this exactly what you want your web presence to achieve? You want to make an economic AND a social impact. One of the best ways to drive traffic and sales to your website is to offer something of value to your public, preferably free. By improving their lives in some way, you generate a social buzz, and people begin talking about your service and emailing your URL to others. You don?t have to think about social impact just in terms of MySpace and Facebook; a good marketing team can assist you in dreaming up bigger and even better ways to impact online social networking to promote your business.

Just in case you?re wondering where I got these green building guidelines from, they came from either the Federal Green Construction Guide for Specifiers or The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System.

How to Find and Do Business With International Suppliers ? SMB ...

Securing a manufacturer to produce unique items or finding a trustworthy supplier to purchase large quantities of general products for your online store is a big challenge for a small business.

?When you?re a small business person, remember that each deal could be your first or last, depending on how you conduct business,? said global trade expert, Jim Angleton, president of Aegis.

The last thing you want to deal with is the cost of losing an uninsured container at sea or transacting with a fraudulent supplier. The good news is that this kind of devastating situation can be avoided when transacting business overseas.

To start, you need to find a supplier who is a good match for your business. One of the leading global trade facilitators, Alibaba.com, provides a business-to-business (B2B) marketplace that helps connect businesses with suppliers and wholesalers in more than 240 countries and territories.

Alibaba.com is a good starting point to find an ecommerce supplier for larger orders and for securing customized goods. An on-site search tool can help you find general product wholesalers, but for more complex requirements you?ll need to submit a request for quotation (RFQ) to be matched with up to 10 customized sourcing companies. Smaller businesses looking to source a smaller quantity of consumer products should look at AliExpress to find a supplier. For buyers, both sites are free to use.

Linda Kozlowski, director of global marketing and customer experience, said that small businesses often use Alibaba.com to purchase large quantities of general product, to look for complex machinery or to find a company to manufacture a new invention or product.

Alibaba.com has a number of services to help facilitate the relationship with any supplier or manufacturer you find on the site. Since most orders require customization and discussion, the transaction takes place off of the Alibaba.com platform, making it extremely important that you take the right steps to protect your business.

Once you have narrowed down the list of suppliers to the best candidates you have to investigate the company you plan to do business with to ensure it is a legitimate supplier that delivers quality product. Fraud is an issue for these types of B2B transactions, no matter what supplier or website you use.

?We always ? no matter what supplier you are using on our site, any other site or even offline ? encourage people to conduct their own due diligence. For any B2B transaction, you must look for references, ask for samples and that sort of thing,? said Kozlowski.

The Alibaba.com site was plagued with fraud issues in February 2011, related to false companies listed on the site as Gold Suppliers. The company dealt with the fraud, which resulted in the resignation of its then CEO, COO and 100 sales people, and it propelled Alibaba.com to implement a series of trust and safety services ? like options for escrow payments and inspection services ? to protect the experience of all Alibaba.com users.

The reality of doing business overseas today is that you need to have as much data as possible at your fingertips.

Describing the initial steps you should take when conducting business with international suppliers, Aegis? Jim Angleton added, ?It begins with a Google search for negative or positive business conduct by your proposed customer. You need to ask for letters of recommendation from at least two banking sources, and then you need to check those references, review customs validations or certificates and shipping.?

Aegis also provides research and due diligence services to businesses when they go offshore by running checks on the companies, the banks involved, brokers and any other individual or company involved in the transaction that you might not have the resources to investigate on your own.

Global ecommerce

Alibaba.com, a B2B marketplace,? connects businesses with suppliers and wholesalers in more than 240 countries.

Another important thing to do is make sure the global trade partner can deliver the goods as promised. This usually requires and on-site inspection ? and there are a number of services and contractors who can help small businesses with on-site inspections in many countries.

Aegis has its own ground troop of expert inspection agents on its payroll. On Alibaba.com, the service lists more than 30 pre-screened inspection service vendors that small businesses can contact to perform on-site inspections on their behalf. Alibaba.com offers its Inspection Service for $1 as a time-limited promotion price to encourage small businesses to become familiar with using an inspection service to ensure quality products are manufactured and delivered.

Aside from knowing whether a company is legit, you also need to secure payments overseas and to make sure the goods are as described. To help facilitate the trade process, Alibaba.com recently launched an escrow service to hold payment until the supplier ships the goods and you confirm the order is received in good working condition.

Kozlowski advises buyers to use escrow payments on Alibaba.com, especially for the first transaction with a new supplier. The escrow service carries a three percent fee, but it helps establish a good relationship with a supplier and can prevent a fraudulent transaction from taking place.

Aegis offers a different solution to help manage transactions using a secure corporate card system. A primary card is held by the small business and a second card on the corporate account is sent to the international supplier. The business loads funds on the card that is held in an account that your global trade partner can see. When the products are shipped, payment is released and the supplier can pick it up by using the second card at their own bank.

Angleton said that no fee is charged to the small business for loading the card, and small business owners also benefit from controlling the transaction in the currency they choose.

Purchasing the right shipping insurance is another common concern. Angleton said he advises clients to obtain adequate shipping insurance, especially on container shipments. Without proper insurance, if there?s an accident or a container gets swept out to sea, the loss is damaging to a small business.

The cost of conducting global trade varies ? but above the actual product purchase you have to consider the cost of due diligence, shipping, insurance and other transaction fees related to payments and escrow services, if you use one.

In today?s world, Angleton said that you can expect to pay upward of $3,000 for the most expensive and comprehensive set of due diligence and to send a qualified person in for the on-site inspection. Depending on the product and situation the inspection could be a lengthy process.

While that might be steep for some ecommerce businesses, in the end it could save you hundreds of thousands of dollars in embarrassment and litigation. And it can potentially keep you from sinking your business in bad deal when conducting business with international suppliers.

UPDATE: Casino campaign reports $195000 support from Missouri ...

Nancy Todd alerted me that the group pushing a casino amendment initiative had filed a batch of papers with the state Ethics Commission today. I've been writing about the absence of reports on her group's effort to gather signatures for an amendment to permit four unregulated casinos operated under her name.

The filings included organizational papers for two new ballot question organizations and they report the money supporting the campaign flows primarily from two investment companies in Missouri ($195,000):

* The Nancy Todd Poker Palace and Entertainment Venues LLC. It shows three people with Little Rock office addresses as leaders ? Bob Womack, director; Larry Weis, officer, and Dianne Dalton as treasurer. Todd and Jim Thompson are also members of the committee, whose mission is to qualify and pass the amendment.

The commitee reported raising $27,600 ? $20,000 from SKAP Investments of Branson, Mo., and $7,500 from Arkansas Development I LLC ? in May. It spent about $3,700 on advertising and signature gathering.

* Also filed was paperwork for Arkansas Development I LLC. It has the same officers and purpose as the Nancy Todd Poker Palace filing.

This group reported (in a belated report on activities in March) raising $175,000 and spending about $45,000. All the money came from Evergreen Investments of Lebanon, Mo. In March, it spent more than $23,000 with the Williams and Anderson law firm in Little Rock and more than $21,000 paying Todd for consulting and expenses.

For April, the group reported spending another $58,753 ? primarily for more Williams and Anderson fees and more payments to Todd.

In May, the group spent another $49,130, leaving about $29,000 of the original money on hand. More than $40,000 went to Todd.

The filings don't show recent expenditures for canvassers, except those on the Poker Palace May report, though the canvassers continue to work, according to multiple reports. I've also heard reports of robocalls and and radio advertising. The batch of late filings would seem tacitly to concede the obvious, that reports didn't begin as law requires with spending of $500.

Registered agent for SKAP Investments is Marc Williams of Branson. He, Todd confirms, is also CFO of HCW LLC, a development firm whose projects have included Branson Landing and hotels in that area. He was out of the office this afternoon. Evergreen Investments is headed by Stephen Plaster, and the firm is also an investor in Branson Landing. Todd said they are partners in the casino effort. Evergreen's holdings were amassed by Plaster's father, the late Robert Plaster, a former utility company chief (Empire Gas) who became well-known for philanthropy in the region, including, perhaps ironically in this context, in support of a Baptist college. I've left a message for him.

Todd also filed a report showing no activity in either fund-raising or expenditures by the organization for which she'd originally filed papers, Arkansas Counts.

The casino amendment would allow casinos in Pulaski, Miller, Crittenden and Franklin counties and prohibit legislative oversight. Amendments require more signatures than initiated act. The group must obtain 78,133 signatures of registered voters by July 6. Initiated acts need 62,507.

UPDATE FOLLOWS AFTER A LATE-AFTERNOON PHONE INTERVIEW WITH TODD:

Todd confirms that the Branson investors are the major backers and have hired her to run the campaign. She said she's been involved in dozens of political and casino campaigns over the years, including successful casino developments from Mississippi to Pennsylvania.

The Branson investors are willing to make a "high-risk" investment on winning approval of a casino amendment in hopes of having a part of the development of the properties with not just casinos, but hotels, other entertainment venues, parking decks and the like. She said the group has had no contact, much less deals, with major casino operators and would not until the amendment passes. But she concedes readily the idea for the group to win licenses that would then become very valuable to someone with expertise in the business. Her only equity interest is to retain the naming rights to a poker room in the Pulaski County casino, which presumably would operate under the name of a major casino operator. She is a professional poker player herself.

Todd takes exception strenuously to my characterization that the amendment would produce an unregulated group of casinos. She contends that case law gives the legislature the power to enact anything not strictly prohibited by the amendment. She said that means it could set up a regulatory commission for casino licensing. She has some high-priced legal talent as advisers, so we'll just have to see. The amendment ballot title says, however: "PROHIBITING THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND ANY POLITICAL SUBDIVISION OF THE STATE FROM ENACTING ANY LEGISLATION, RULES OR REGULATIONS REGARDING CASINO GAMING." That's a fairly broad prohibition.

In her view, this pertains only to the games offered at casinos. The amendment also sets the tax rate and prohibits the legislature from appropriating the money, instead designating percentage allotments to a variety of education, health and other programs.

Todd said future reports were to be consolidated under the Arkansas Counts organization. She said she'd had a misunderstanding about required filing and said she now understood that reports should have been filed earlier. She blamed this on miscommunication among various parties. She said she expected to be called down by the Ethics Commission on the late filings and said she was prepared to pay any fine that might be assessed.

"I'm not big on the blame game," she said. "It bears my name and I take responsibility."

She said she'd known her Branson partners since the late 1990s, but hadn't thought the time was right to try a campaign in Arkansas until this year. She said she understood she faced tough opposition from Oaklawn Park and Southland Park, both of which operate casinos. "That's politics," she said. She said even if she's successful another petitioner could come in two years with new competition or even a proposal to overturn the whole thing.

She said she doesn't believe the theory of an aversion to casino gambling among Arkansas voters. She said difficulties here are more about the "arduous" petition process, "designed for failure."

She said she's confident she'll get the needed signatures, with more than 13,000 gathered in Pulaski County.

By the way: Jim Thompson is a Branson service station owner, not the Jim Thompson who was once a political consultant here. Dianne Dalton is a former phone company executive, not Diane Bray, the former beer wholesale who joined a casino push some years ago and married former City Manager Tom Dalton.

(AP) ? Parts of the main interstate highway across northern Florida were closed by flooding Tuesday as Tropical Storm Debby hung stubbornly offshore over the Gulf of Mexico, threatening up to two feet of rain in places.

After raking Florida's Gulf coast with high winds and heavy rain, Debby promised to bring more of the same in the coming days as it drifted on a path forecast to take it over the state and east into the Atlantic by Friday.

The National Hurricane Center said Debby was about 85 miles west of Cedar Key, Fla., and moving eastward near 3 mph. It had maximum sustained winds near 45 mph, barely tropical-storm status.

But the wind, high surf and relentless rain have made the storm's presence felt.

The Florida Highway Patrol closed portions of Interstate 10 in north Florida early Tuesday due to flooding caused by rain. Troopers reported several areas of flooding on a roughly 50-mile stretch of the east-west interstate east of where it crosses I-75 and the agency warned motorists to use extreme caution on other parts of the highway.

South of that stretch of I-10, four puppies and a young dog drowned when a swollen creek flooded an animal shelter in the city of Starke. The Florida Times-Union reported that officials placed sandbags and dug trenches outside to protect the shelter, but the water rose quickly Sunday night.

Farther south, in the Tampa Bay area, roads such as Tampa's Bayshore Boulevard were washed out. Residents tried to salvage belongings from flooded homes in low-lying areas. At one point Monday, high winds and flooding concerns prompted authorities to close two major routes over Tampa Bay into St. Petersburg.

A mother manatee was found dead in the water Tuesday off Bayshore Boulevard. Her two calves, which were still alive, washed ashore along the flooded road which runs along Tampa Bay. Members of the Tampa Police Marine Patrol called Lowry Park Zoo and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to help with the rescue of the baby manatees.

Forecasters were expecting the rains to continue, bringing another 4 to 8 inches across northern Florida. The storm could also bring up to 10 inches of rain to the Brunswick area in southeastern Georgia, forecasters said.

Torrential rains and flooding would continue across parts of the Florida Panhandle and northern Florida for several days, even though the storm wasn't expected to gain strength.

"The widespread flooding is the biggest concern," said Florida Emergency Operations Center spokeswoman Julie Roberts. "It's a concern that Debby is going to be around for the next couple of days, and while it sits there, it's going to continue to drop rain. The longer it sits, the more rain we get."

At least one person was killed Sunday by a tornado spun off by the large storm system.

WFLA-TV reported that a young mother, Heather Town, died Sunday when her Highlands County home was lifted off its foundation and she and her baby girl were thrown into nearby woods. The mother was found clutching the child, who survived.

Alabama authorities searched for a man who disappeared in the rough surf.

The bridge leading to St. George Island, a vacation spot along the Panhandle, was closed to everyone except residents, renters and business owners to keep looters out. The island had no power, and palm trees had been blown down, but roads were passable.

"Most true islanders are hanging in there because they know that you may or may not be able to get back to your home when you need to," said David Walker, an island resident having a beer at Eddy Teach's bar. He said he had been through many storms on the island and Debby was on the weaker end of the scale.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott declared a statewide emergency, allowing authorities to put laws against price-gouging into effect and override bureaucratic hurdles to deal with the storm.

A tropical storm warning remained in effect Tuesday morning for about 450 miles of coastline, from Mexico Beach in the Panhandle to Englewood, south of Sarasota.

Forecasters cautioned that Debby is a large tropical cyclone spreading strong winds and heavy rains at great distances from its center.

They said it would crawl generally east, come ashore along Florida's northwestern coast Wednesday night and track slowly across the state, exiting along the Atlantic Coast by Friday and losing steam as it crosses land.

"We're not expecting the storm to intensify," said Ernie Jillson, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Tampa, early Tuesday. "We're expecting it to stay a fairly weak tropical storm."

People in several sparsely populated counties near the crook of Florida's elbow were urged to leave low-lying neighborhoods because of the danger of flooding. Shelters opened in some places.

Attention New Hampshire Climbers? You Did It! | Climberism ...

A little over a month ago, we at Climberism sent out an announcement calling attention to House Bill 1551, which involved the protection of landowners whose property is used for ?hunting, fishing, trapping, camping, horseback riding, bicycling, water sports, winter sports, snowmobiling, or OHRVs (off-highway recreation vehicles) as defined in RSA 215-A, hiking, sightseeing, or removal of fuel wood. With the recent amendment to the bill, climbing is now on that list as well, explicitly protecting the landowners. ?With this protection comes ease of mind to private land owners who may have been once wary of letting climbers onto their property for fear of liability if anything should happen out of the rock.

?This is an important piece of legislation for climbers, with landowners protected from liability if someone is injured while climbing on their property, it makes it much more likely that a landowner would consider public access to climbing.? -?Erik Eisele

Local climbers rallied on May 9th submitting letters and phone calls to their Senators. Erik Eisele, Access Fund NH Regional Coordinator and Climberism Contributor took on the leadership role here, and together climbers were able to get some testimony time in at the Senate hearing on the bill. Tim Kemple Sr. provided the testimony and advocation for the amendment as well and the Sentate passed HB 1551 with it?s new climbing amendment on June 1st.
