England v South Africa, third ODI: live

OVER 13: ENG 53/1 (Cook 16*, Trott 23*) Just a single from Jonathan Trott from the over, and Wayne Parnell has now bowled three overs for just five runs. England require 159 from 37 overs (4.3 RPO).

OVER 12: ENG 52/1 (Cook 16*, Trott 22*) South Africa - courtesy of Morne Morkel and Parnell - are starting to tighten up a bit. Cook plays out five dot balls before punching the ball past mid-on for four from the final ball to avoid a maiden. Until that one he had been struggling somewhat to get the ball off the square. England require 160 from 38 overs (4.2 RPO).

OVER 11: ENG 48/1 (Cook 12*, Trott 22*) Stonking first ball of the over from Parnell which beats Cook all ends up. Good over from Wazza - three runs come from it. England require 164 from 39 overs (4.2 RPO).

OVER 10: ENG 45/1 (Cook 10*, Trott 21*) Trott plays one right off his hip for a couple of runs then repeats the trick a few balls later. And that's the end of the first powerplay. England require 167 from 40 overs (4.2 RPO).

OVER 9: ENG 41/1 (Cook 10*, Trott 17*) Wayne Parnell into the attack for Steyn, and it is a good start from him. He is very close to Trott's outside edge as the English batsman looks to use the pace of the ball to guide it towards third man. England require 171 from 41 overs (4.2 RPO).

OVER 8: ENG 40/1 (Cook 10*, Trott 16*) Morne Morkel replaces Tsotsobe. Not that Trott is concerned by that, as he pummels his first ball for another boundary. Morkel does go on to deceive Cook, though, with a ball which the England captain tried to flick into leg. England require 172 from 42 overs (4.1 RPO).

OVER 7: ENG 35/1 (Cook 10*, Trott 11*) Steyn looks mighty peeved as Trott chops one agonisingly close to his stumps before it races away for four. Cook carves the final ball of the over through the off side for another boundary. England are well up with the required run rate - 11 come from the over. England require 177 from 43 overs (4.1 RPO).

OVER 6: ENG 24/1 (Cook 4*, Trott 6*) Trott pushes Tsotsobe into the leg side for three before Cook finally gets off the mark by glancing one off his hips to the boundary in front of square. Tsotsobe is proving to be fairly expensive so far. England require 188 from 44 overs (4.3 RPO).

OVER 5: ENG 17/1 (Cook 0*, Trott 3*) Some excellent fielding by a leaping Faf du Plessis at point prevents what looked like it could have been a Trott boundary as Steyn continues to keep it straight. Alastair Cook has now faced 15 balls without scoring, while Steyn has conceded just three runs from his three overs. England require 195 from 45 overs (4.3 RPO).

OVER 4: ENG 16/1 (Cook 0*, Trott 2*) A much tidier over from Tsotsobe. Just a Trott single, and he also gets Cook in a slight spot of bother as he is struck on the pad with one which just brushes past his outside edge before looping up into the air. England require 196 from 46 overs (4.3 RPO).

E-mail More punning on the emails - excellent to see. This in from Lanky: "Cook era - recipe for disaster. England to win by 3 wickets."

OVER 3: ENG 15/1 (Cook 0*, Trott 1*) Just two off the over from Steyn - and only one against his name. Jonathan Trott is the new bat. He gets off the mark by dabbing the ball towards third man for a single. England require 197 from 47 overs (4.2 RPO).

Wicket WICKET! Bell lbw b Steyn 12 Oh dear, I hope my poor pun wasn't a curse on Ian Bell, who is pinned right in front by a fullish ball from Steyn. No doubts in my mind, but Umpire Kettleborough takes an age to raise the finger. Bell quickly consults Captain Cook, who tells him what Hawkeye confirms - he's out - before he trots off. FOW 13/1.

OVER 2: ENG 13/0 (Cook 0*, Bell 12*) Lonwabo Tsotsobe is a bit all over the place and Ian Bell helps himself to two fours off the first three balls of the over, both struck forcefully through the off side. Then he pulls another loosener to the leg-side boundary. Tsotsobe, it seems, is one bowler for whom the Bell tolls. England require 199 from 48 overs (4.1 RPO).

E-mail Thanks - kind of - to the budding meteorologists who replied to my requests at 16.52. Here's Jeff Wigham: "It?s raining in Friedelsheim ( near Frankfurt / Heidelberg ) if that is any help!"

OVER 1: ENG 1/0 (Cook 0*, Bell 0*) Dale Steyn takes the new ball and it's a pretty decent first over, save for a legside wide. Aside from that, Alastair Cook seems happy to play out six dots. England require 211 from 49 overs (4.3 RPO).

17.02 Well, it appears I have been deceived by the windows. It still looks fine, if slightly more cloudy. Here come South Africa, followed by the England batsmen - we're about to get restarted.

16.52 Is it the Sky Sports studio windows, or has it suddenly turned really overcast at the Oval? Anyone in the Kennington/Vauxhall able to shed some light (sorry) on it?

16.40 So, are we confident England can chase down the target of 212, which is barely over four runs an over? The pitch doesn't exactly look terrible, and weather conditions are still perfect at the Oval.

16.26 So a pretty good innings for England, who, don't forget, lost the toss. Jimmy Anderson - who will be on a hat-trick at the next ODI - rounded off the tail and finished with four wickets. Jade Dernbach finished with three, while Ravi Bopara bowled all 10 overs for just 31 runs. Hashim Amla, with 43, top-scored for the Proteas.

Wicket WICKET! Tsotsobe lbw b Anderson 0 Jimmy Anderson finishes the South Africans off by trapping Lanwabo Tsotsobe in front first ball. South Africa review - they might as well - and it looks slightly high but Hawkeye says it's going on to clip the leg bail, which means it stays with Umpire Richard Kettleborough's decision of out. SA last just 46.4 overs. FOW 211-10

Wicket WICKET! Steyn b Anderson 1 Well, it doesn't look as if South Africa are going to survive the 50 overs. Anderson knocks over Morkel stumps with another one which keeps straight. Morkel becomes the sixth batter to have been dismissed bowled. FOW 211-9

OVER 46: SA 211/8 (Peterson 23*, Morkel 7*) Morkel guides the first ball of Dernbach's ninth over off his hips, a touch uppishly, but it races away safely to the boundary. First decent over for the tourists for quite a while.

OVER 45: SA 204/8 (Peterson 22*, Morkel 1*) Peterson had relieved a bit of the pressure by carving a four from the first delivery of Anderson, and after a single put Steyn on strike the Englishman struck back in some style. SA have 30 balls left to rescue this innings.

Wicket WICKET! Steyn b Anderson 1 Dale Steyn can only manage a single from his seven balls before his off pole is smashed out of the ground by a perfect delivery from James Anderson. England dominating, South Africa struggling. FOW 203-8

OVER 44: SA 198/7 (Peterson 17*, Steyn 1*) Tredwell sends down his last over and it's another very valuable one for England, with just a couple of singles coming from it.

OVER 43: SA 196/7 (Peterson 16*, Steyn 0*) Bopara bowls his 10th and final over - Michael Holding on the box tells us it's only the second time in his ODI career he's bowled his full complement, which is a stat I quite like. It's another very tidy over from the Essex man. Indeed, it's so tidy it's played out by Peterson for a maiden. Well done Ravi. His final figures are an impressive 10-1-31-1.

OVER 42: SA 196/7 (Peterson 16*, Steyn 0*) So Dale Steyn is the new man. Peterson had picked up three runs to fine leg just before the wicket and then another single - the batsmen had crossed after Duminy had skied one.

Wicket WICKET! Duminy c Bell b Tredwell 33 JP goes for a big one, but doesn't get anywhere near enough behind it as it goes very high but not very far. Bell is underneath it and just about clings on to the catch, well inside the long-off boundary. FOW 195-7

OVER 41: SA 192/6 (Peterson 12*, Duminy 33*) It's Ravi Bopara's turn to have a bowl and he almost continues with his excellent economy rate from earlier, but a boundary cut away past backward point by Duminy relieves a bit of the pressure on the Proteas. There's also a big appeal for lbw, but it's both pitching and hitting well outside leg stump.

OVER 40: SA 187/6 (Peterson 11*, Duminy 29*) Anderson bowls the last over of the batting powerplay (which I may have mistakenly said England had taken, apologies for that obvious wrong) and concedes just four. It means South Africa managed only 22 runs from the five-over PP, so pretty good going from the hosts.

OVER 39: SA 183/6 (Peterson 9*, Duminy 27*) And four more singles conceded by Finn in an over which included a wild swipe at a slightly wide ball from Peterson and a leading edge from Duminy.

OVER 38: SA 179/6 (Peterson 7*, Duminy 25*) Right, anyway, in comes Anderson. He seems in a mean mood, conceding just a pair of singles. With 12 overs to go, what sort of scores would each side be happy with from here on in?

E-mail It looks as though we have a new leader in the pun contest I'm not sure we were previously playing. Does that make sense? Anyway, this from Andrew Holgate: "Dernbach has been as effective as a Nimrod today. He's got rid of Elgar without too much pomp and circumstance, but it's an enigma why he isn't more consistent."

OVER 37: SA 177/6 (Peterson 6*, Duminy 24*) Dernbach continues. Some sharp and intelligent running from the Saffers helps them pick up five singles to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

OVER 36: SA 172/6 (Peterson 4*, Duminy 21*) Steven Finn replaces Tredwell as the third powerplay is taken. The paceman can't keep it as tight as he might have hoped, however, and throws his hands up in frustration after a stray one down the leg side is clipped away to the fine-leg boundary by Duminy.

OVER 35: SA 165/6 (Peterson 3*, Duminy 15*) Five runs off the over but it's another excellent one from Jade Dernbach. And he almost picks up his fourth wicket as Robin Peterson mistimes an attempted drive and inside edges just past his stumps.

OVER 34: SA 160/6 (Peterson 0*, Duminy 14*) Five off the Tredwell over as JP Duminy hits a couple of twos then a single. He is going to be a key man for South Africa, you suspect, and is going to have to play an intelligent innings for the Proteas.

OVER 33: SA 155/6 (Peterson 0*, Duminy 9*) It looked like it was going to be an expensive over from Dernbach, but - aside from a sweetly struck on-side drive from Parnell - he had the South African in all sorts of bother. Fantastic bowling from Dernbach, and South Africa are under a bit of pressure here.

Wicket WICKET! Elgar c Kieswetter b Dernbach 13 Dernbach is on fire - he conceded consecutive fours on the previous two balls to Wayne Parnell, but both come from big outside edges which evade Craig Kiewswetter behind the stumps. But, finally, Parnell's luck runs out and he gets a thin edge to the keeper. FOW 155-6

OVER 32: SA 143/5 (Parnell 1*, Duminy 9*) Tight over from Tredwell there. Little to report from it, which is just as well as we've had a little switch around here. I'm Huw Silk and I'll be with you for the foreseeable future.

OVER 31: SA 141/5 (Parnell 0*, Duminy 8*) Two Dernbach dots, then Duminy has to reach to cut away a quite wide one for a single. Then the wicket, and Dernbach has two for 16.

Wicket WICKET! Elgar b Dernbach 42 That is a beauty! Dernbach's slow leggie, and the variation does for Elgar (hooray!). He is beaten all ends up! Superbly executed ball. FOW 141-5

OVER 30: SA 140/4 (Elgar 42*, Duminy 7) Tredwell being milked again. 1, 1, 2 (nice paddle from Elgar), 1, 1, 2 - take him off. He will probably get a wicket again now.

OVER 29: SA 132/4 (Elgar 36*, Duminy 5) Bopara a revelation. Elgar works him for leg for two first ball, then three dots, then an Elgar single, then a dot; three off the over, Ravi eight overs for 26, putting the super squeeze on the South Africans.

OVER 28: SA 129/4 (Elgar 33*, Duminy 5) Empassioned lbw appeal from Tredwell. Pitches middle to left-handed Duminy, but turns too much, missing his off stump. Another good over, though, from the Kentish slow-leftie.

OVER 27: SA 127/4 (Elgar 32*, Duminy 3) Duminy quickly away, punches wide of mid-on for three. But this is looking fairly good for England now.

Wicket WICKET! du Plessis b Bopara 1 The new man doesn't last long, and reward for the commendably tight line (at his modest pace) Bopara has bowled. Second ball of the over, du Plessis goes across his stumps in pre-planner fashion and the ball hits leg. Shows it's always wise to stick to the basics early on in your innings. FOW 122-4

OVER 26: SA 122/3 (du Plessis 1* Elgar 31*) Tredwell is a different man, he takes his cap and bounces off. Elgar and new man du Plessis take a couple of singles but it's a tight over, 1-26 from four looks a whole lot better.

Wicket WICKET! De Villiers c Bell b Tredwell 28 Another wicket completely out of the blue. Fair play to Cook, most skippers would have taken Tredwell off. But the Kent twirler has struck. De Villiers hit him beautifully over midwicket twice in the last over, but this time picks out Bell at long -on. FOW 120-3

OVER 25: SA 119/2 (De Villiers 28* Elgar 29*) England look a little thin on bowling today, particularly in light of Tredwell's travails. they need 20 overs between Tredwell, Bopara (who is bowling well) and Samit Patel, who hasn't turned his arm over yet. Five singles off this latest Bopara offering, only teh fifth ball, to Elgar, is a dot. De Villiers 28 off 30 balls - he doesn't hang around.

OVER 24: SA 114/2 (De Villiers 26* Elgar 26*) Problems for Tredwell. Elgar breaking out of his shell. Clips offie over mid-on for four first ball, then a single. Quality shot from De Villiers fourth delivery, lofted over mdiwicket, then similar shot for three but Bell cuts off. Elgar takes a single last ball and that's 13 off the over, Tredwell three for 23. Swannie, cancel that holiday! [Only kidding]. Come on Tredders!

OVER 23: SA 101/2 (De Villiers 19* Elgar 20*) De Villiers takes single to cover first ball, then Elgar pushes to mid-off (who is quite deep) for another one third ball, but otherwise, another fine over from Bopara.

E-mail While Peter Rowntree speculates: This looks a very thin England team to me, aside from Anderson and Finn, light on bowling; if SA get through our top three, light on batting. Think we are in for pasting today, although I hope I am wrong. Can't understand why on current form Bopara is preferred to Bairstow. As for KP, terrific player, but if the rumours circulating are correct that he criticised James Taylor in front of other England colleagues on his debut, then it is simple he should never play for England again.Alastair Cook era? Well given that team selection is part of the job, the young man has something of a learning curve to make.

E-mailAndrew Barnes says: The Cook era won't sizzle with this England tail. What does Woakes need to do to get a game?

OVER 22: SA 99/2 (De Villiers 18* Elgar 19*) And now it's spin, and Tredwell. We've had Finn, Dernbach, Anderson, Bopara, now Tredwell. It's not T20, Cookie! Safe to say he won't be making this many changes in Test cricket, isn't it?! Elgar takes single second ball, then - fourth ball - De Villiers plays a paddled reverse sweep for three. Elgar drives for one, then De Villiers ends over with a single, so attempt to regain the initiative there for the tourists.

OVER 21: SA 93/2 (De Villiers 14* Elgar 17*) Very tight over from Bopara, and the inverse of the 20th from Anderson - first four balls are dots, then two singles. England containing well here.

OVER 20: SA 91/2 (De Villiers 13* Elgar 16*) Singles from the first four balls of the returning Anderson's over. The last two balls are dots. Considering that was the last over of the bowling Powerplay for England, they'd settle for that.

OVER 19: SA 87/2 (De Villiers 11* Elgar 14*) Elgar single. Second ball also brings a single, to De Villiers. Then Finn appeals for lbw but ball impacts Elgar outside off stump. Elgar pushes a single wideof mid-on. Tight over.

OVER 18: SA 85/2 (De Villiers 10* Elgar 12*) Quick single for De Villiers. Then Elgar drives square and forces Morgan into a good, diving stop. Next ball he does take one. Over ends with a sumptious drive from De Villiers. Opens the face slightly and punches through extra. How can a player come in and play shots like that from the off? Magnificent. Finn bit expensive, nought for 31 from six.

OVER 17: SA 78/2 (De Villiers 4* Elgar 11*) Tidy Dernbach over until captain De Villiers tickles one down the leg side for four. Still, good over for England.

Twitter Nick Hoult ?@NHoultCricket: Dernbach bowls Amla and marks it with a celebration from the KP School of Under Statement. Can't blame him tho

Wicket WICKET! Amla b Dernbach 42 Coasting to his doom! Amla bowled by Dernbach. I put the kiss of death on him there. Who saw that one coming? Full-pitched ball, Amla slighly loose in the drive, bit of an inside edge, and then the dreaded rattle - off pole removed. FOW 73-2

OVER 16: SA 73/1 (Amla 43* Elgar 11*) Hashim 'The New Wall' Amla takes a quick single to mid-off. Elgar takes off like Nimrod to ensure he makes his ground. He also takes one; then later in the over Amla whips Finn comfortably off his hips for another single. Easy-paced track and Amla coasting.

OVER 15: SA 72/1 (Amla 41* Elgar 10*) Four off the Ravi over, which heralds the arrival of Huw Turbervill to do a bit of blogging; and the bowling Powerplay for England.

OVER 14: SA 66/1 (Amla 39* Elgar 8*) Continuing the theme of quiet but not especially exciting cricket, James Trewell comes on for an over of his honest off-spinners. Four off it.

OVER 13: SA 62/1 (Amla 36* Elgar 7*) Another useful over from Ravi Bopara, just two runs from it. It's one of those rather boring passages of ODI play where both sides are happy just to idle for a bit.

OVER 12: SA 60/1 (Amla 35* Elgar 6*) Been quiet since the wicket. Jade Dernbach keeps a lid on things with his battery of slower balls and leg-cutters. A single to each player.

OVER 11: SA 58/1 (Amla 34* Elgar 5*) Ravi Bopara comes on for an early bowl, encouraging signs of inventive captaincy from Cook. Decent over from Ravi, just three off it.

OVER 10: SA 55/1 (Amla 32* Elgar 4*) Jade Dernbach comes in. A single to third man for Amla, and now a chance for England to have a look at Dean Elgar. He's VERY lucky not to chop the ball onto his own stumps; but then plays a pleasing square drive that gives him four runs.

OVER 9: SA 50/1 (Amla 31* Elgar 0*) That was a most generous donation to the England cause from Smith. Earlier in the over, he had calmly and ruthlessly lumped a couple of balls to the legside for two and four. All very odd. Young Elgar - Edward to his friends, or probably not - comes to the crease.

Wicket WICKET! Smith b Anderson 18 Blimey, that's a real gift for England! Smith has what I can only describe as a rush of blood to the head, charges down the pitch like a madman and heaves wildly at a straight ball. FOW 50/1

OVER 8: SA 44/0 (Amla 31* Smith 12*) Finn gets away with a full toss to Smith, but not to a short ball at Amla, who pulls it away with relish. Now he slaps a ball through the offside. Two unusually workmanlike strokes from the stylist Amlan, and that makes ten off the over.

OVER 7: SA 34/0 (Amla 22* Smith 11*) Ugly heave from Smith - more so than usual, I mean - and he fails to connect. Much better over from Anderson, there are just two runs from it.

OVER 6: SA 32/0 (Amla 21* Smith 10*) Two nice bits of fielding - one from bowler Finn himself, the other from Morgan at square leg - keep this Finn over down to two, so it could all have ben a lot worse. England have yet to create much.

OVER 5: SA 30/0 (Amla 20* Smith 9*) It's not often you see Jimmy Anderson bowl a bad over for England, but that was pretty toilet. Amla runs the ball of the face for two, then drives and overpitched ball through cover for four. Anderson over-corrects with a legside wide, and then another legside ball is helped on its way for a boundary. Reckon this is a 300-pitch.

OVER 4: SA 18/0 (Amla 9* Smith 9*) Smith works a ball into the legside for four. After a single, Finn yet again knocks the bails off in his delivery stride and this time the umpires have had enough. nice ball from Finn now though, jagging it back into Amla who gets an inside edge.

E-mail An email arrives from a South African in Denmark! I love the internets. Writes Jim Neversink: "Breaking News on KP: England have purchased exclusive rights to use U2's ''With or Without You'' as their theme song. Shortlisted were ''I ain't missing you at all, no matter what my teammates say'' and ''County Roads take me home.'' Jokes aside, I'm a fan of the man and hope to see him back in the team soon and even as a Saffer, I feel deprived not being able to witness his magic. Win or lose I just want to see some good cricket."

OVER 3: SA 12/0 (Amla 8* Smith 4*) Cook removes one of the slips, so just one in the cordon for Jimmy Anderson with the new ball. Uncharacteristic heave and a miss from Amla. But now a lovely punch back down the ground for four to the same batsman - economy of effort, all timing. What a player this fellow is. Picks up a couple off the last ball of the over and the early signs from The Oval is that this is a nice day for a bat.

OVER 2: SA 6/0 (Amla 2* Smith 4*) Finn. Knocks the bails off the non-striker's stumps right away (by accident, I mean, not a Mankading incident). A legside delivery is meat and drink to Basher Smith, off those big pads for a couple. Ugly drive down the ground from Smith is stopped by Finn. Now an offside ball, but it's all the same to Smith. He pulls that away for a couple. Finn knocks the bails off again from the last ball of the over and Smith is in the unpire's ear moaning about it. Those fielders in the offside might as well bring a deckchair.

OVER 1: SA 2/0 (Amla 2* Smith 0*) Not much movement to speak of in that first over from Anderson. Amla tucks him off the pads for a couple.

12.57 Here comes James Anderson to bowl to Amla. interestingly, or not, Amla is batting one and Smith two today - the reverse of their positions in the last game.

12.55 So the players are coming out. Will Hashim Amla be giving us another masterclass? England will hope not. Incidentally, if they win this game, they will go back to the top of the ODI rankings.

12.50 These two men really have their work cut out I reckon. On paper, these teams are starting to look a bit mismatched. South Africa have won the toss and will bat.

12.30: Afternoon everyone, welcome to our live coverage today's one-dayer.

England team: AN Cook*, IR Bell, IJL Trott, RS Bopara, EJG Morgan, C Kieswetter?, JC Tredwell, SR Patel, JM Anderson, JW Dernbach, ST Finn

South Africa team: GC Smith, HM Amla, D Elgar, AB de Villiers*?, JP Duminy, F du Plessis, WD Parnell, RJ Peterson, M Morkel, LL Tsotsobe, DW Steyn

MATCH FACTS

England have won their last four ODIs at The Kia Oval, the last three of those victories came when batting second.

James Anderson is the leading wicket-taker in ODIs at The Kia Oval having picked up 21 scalps at an average of 21.28.

South Africa have lost their last three ODIs against England at The Kia Oval. The Proteas last victory at the south London venue in this format was in the 1999 ICC World Cup.

In the previous match of this series AB de Villiers became the fourth fastest batsman to 5,000 ODI runs. Only West Indian legends Viv Richards, Brian Lara and Gordon Greenidge have reached the landmark after fewer innings.

Just three England players have a career strike rate of over 90 in ODIs and they are all present in England's current middle-order (minimum 500 balls faced). Tim Bresnan (92.53), Craig Kieswetter (91.82) and Eoin Morgan (91.25) top the list of England's quickest runscorers in this format.

In his previous eight ODIs this summer Ian Bell has been dismissed for under 40 just once. The England opener averages 62.71 since returning to the ODI side in June.

Ravi Bopara has scored just 44 runs at an average of 6.29 across all formats since 19th July.

South Africa have scored fewer sixes than their opponents in five of their last six ODI victories. In those six matches they have scored a total of 12 maximums in contrast to their opponents' 24.

Hashim Amla has passed 50 in six of his last seven innings in this form of the game.

ZQuiet is made in a way that it repositions the oral cavity and the tongue so that they do not obscure the inhaling and exhaling passage. It consists of a soft living joint that permits your own oral cavity not only to move efficiently, but also to adjust the placement of the mouth area at your convenience. Hence, while you are sleeping, the soft pivot enables your mouth muscle tissues to open and close much more efficiently and naturally. The soft living joint can also be adaptable and for that reason decreases any kind of possible danger of utilizing the mouth piece while you rest. This particular capability divides ZQuiet from other mouthguards which can cause a large amount of pain to the person.

Besides its excellent style and simple to use characteristics, ZQuiet meets the approval of The Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This means that you dont have to worry about the security of the ZQuiet or whether it works. Typically, FDA merely clears goods that aren?t by any means, unhealthy for the body. Additionally, to limit ZQuiet complaints, this product includes cash back guarantee. You have thirty days to collect your hard earned money if you are not pleased with the merchandise.

In reality, ZQuiet seems to be most popular loud snoring mouthpiece. It?s an innovation that a lot of individuals with snoring difficulties have certainly been waiting for. Hence, if you are a sufferer of loud snores difficulty and your partner or property mates are tired of your respective behavior, then ZQuiet is a good bet.

China to overtake US in smartphones: IDC

37 min.

China will overtake the United States as the world's biggest smartphone market this year, according to research firm IDC, which expects demand to grow for lower-priced smartphones based on Google's Android software.

IDC forecast that China's share of the smartphone market will increase to 26.5 percent this year from 18.3 percent last year, while U.S. market share declines to 17.8 percent from 21.3 percent.

China's sales will be helped by the availability of Android devices priced at $100 or less due to intensifying competition among smartphone vendors, according to IDC. The research firm expects Chinese carriers to help sales by subsidizing phones.

South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co is the biggest maker of phones using Android around the world and also in the Chinese market. There it is trailed by domestic companies, including Huawei Technologies Co Ltd (HTC), ZTE and Lenovo.

In the U.S., growth is expected to slow this year because smartphones already make up the majority of shipments here.

The United Kingdom, the next biggest smartphone market, will trail behind, with a 4.5 percent market share. India's market share is expected to be 2.5 percent in 2012 and will grow to 8.5 percent in 2016.

When we speak of luxury, what do we specifically mean about it? Is it pertaining to lavish living and extremely extravagance consumptions of things that is not very important and is not included in men daily basic needs? Is dental care becoming more of a luxury today? Why do we say so? Because how can someone work better, communicate well and express their selves, and how can they properly communicate with other people if they feel pain because of dental problems.

Some people are not giving full considerations with regards to caring of teeth, simply because they are thinking of the possible high expenses they might face. But in the contrary, not being interested with your tooth health will result to a more expensive expenditure.

Other individuals are also finding it a luxury due to some hearsay. Proper dental care is an excellent gift for you and your love ones. It is not lavish thing to do if observe properly and in a correct manner.

Next, consider dental care not as a luxury but bear in mind that we need it in ourselves to enjoy life?s living free of pain and any form of burden and always take proper dental care to lengthen the life span of our teeth.

Lastly, think of certain things you can do on how you can save even a little for your family dental care. You can consider doing things like researching in the websites or in other informational reading materials or asked questions to your family and friends. Having referrals to your friend family dentist, checking out some available dentist that is just starting out or asking some informative techniques on proper dental hygiene will be a great help.

Remember don?t be afraid to face your necessities and never treat them as a luxury. Each one of us needs a proper dental care to have a healthy and enjoyable living.

New maps may reduce tourism impacts on Hawaiian dolphins

Tuesday, August 28, 2012

Over-eager eco-tourists intent on seeing spinner dolphins up close may inadvertently be disturbing the charismatic animals' daytime rest periods and driving them out of safe habitats in bays along Hawaii's coast.

Scientists at Duke and Stony Brook universities have developed a promising new tool that may help to limit repeated human disturbances and help reduce their negative impacts on the dolphins.

"Using the maps produced through this study we can identify the bays where the effects of human activities on spinner dolphins should be monitored most closely, and where immediate conservation actions are required," said David W. Johnston, research scientist at Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment.

The researchers' tool shows that only a small number of bays ? 21 out of 99 ? in a study area along the western coastlines of the main Hawaiian islands were suitable habitats for resting dolphins. Knowing this, "conservation efforts can be focused on specific areas of importance," Johnston said,

"We may be able to minimize detrimental effects on dolphins by putting restrictions or preventative measures into place in a relatively small number of bays, rather than limiting access to dolphins along the entire coast," said the study's lead author, Lesley H. Thorne, a lecturer in marine science at Stony Brook University, who received her PhD from Duke in 2010. "That benefits tourists and tourism operators as well as the dolphins."

In the study, the researchers used the geographic coordinates and key environmental factors ? such as water depth and calmness, the size and proportions of the bays and distances from deep-water foraging grounds ? for hundreds of spinner dolphin sightings made in the study area between 2000 and 2010. The results appear August 27 in the online, open-access peer-reviewed journal PLoS ONE.

Spinners are small dolphins famed for their graceful aerial movements and balletic spins. They are found in tropical and subtropical oceans around the world and some divide their time between daytime rest periods in shallow, protected bays and nighttime foraging in more exposed waters.

Distinguishing between sightings of resting and active dolphins was key to defining critical habitats, Thorne said. While socially active spinner dolphins are more tolerant of humans' presence, resting dolphins will leave the safety of a bay and retreat to less suitable open waters if humans repeatedly disturb them.

"Sleep is essential for most animals," added Johnston. "When deprived of their necessary 'zzzz's,' they gradually show a decreased ability to process information and remain attentive to environmental stimuli. In technical lingo, we call this a 'vigilance decrement'."

Spinner dolphins are no exception to the rule. The researchers say dolphins that experience human harassment every day during their rest periods never fully recover their vigilance decrement. Their ability to forage successfully and detect the presence of nearby predators is also degraded, and their ability to produce sounds to communicate and navigate may also be impaired, he said.

Scientists and conservationists have long worried that spinners' popularity with tourists ? and overlap of their resting habitats with popular ocean recreation destinations ? may be placing them at risk. Reports of interactions have increased sharply in recent years, but few published studies have examined the detrimental impacts these interruptions may have on the animals, especially at the population level.

"It would be next to impossible to survey spinner populations and human activities in every bay that might be a resting habitat," Thorne said. "We're talking about hundreds of bays in the Hawaiian islands alone."

"Using predictive models, such as the maximum entropy spatial modeling approaches we've produced, is a much more cost-effective method," she said. "This type of modeling has only recently been applied to the study of marine mammals, but our study suggests it may be especially useful."

Thorne and Johnston plan to test their models by conducting similar studies of spinner dolphin distributions and habitat use in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and other sites in the Pacific islands region. Results from those studies, they said, could confirm the new models' usefulness.

Johnston and Thorne's co-authors on the PLoS ONE study include Dean L. Urban, professor of landscape ecology at Duke's Nicholas School, and Lars Bejdar, associate professor at Murdoch University, Australia, and adjunct assistant professor at Duke.

The data on spinner dolphin sightings used to develop the models in the study were provided by a team of eight additional co-authors from Murdoch University, the Pacific Islands Photo-Identification Network, the Cascadia Research Collective, the Hawai'i Marine Mammal Consortium, the Hawai'i Association for Marine Education and Research, the Dolphin Institute, the University of Hawai'i (UH) at Hilo, UH at M?noa, and Marine Mammal Research Consultants.

Military says trial of accused Fort Hood shooter can go ahead

AUSTIN, Texas (Reuters) - Proceedings may resume in the court martial of alleged Fort Hood shooter Major Nidal Hasan, a military court ruled on Monday, less than a week after it stopped the trial to consider whether Hasan's beard could be forcibly shaved.

The Court of Appeals for the Armed Forces did not say whether Colonel Gregory Gross, the military trial judge, could order Hasan shaved.

Gross has threatened to have Hasan shaved if he does not get rid of the beard himself before his next court appearance, saying the beard breaks Army regulations.

The decision on Monday simply allows hearings in the case to go forward for now without a resolution of the beard issue. No new hearing dates have been set yet in the case, which was to go to trial before a military jury on August 20.

Hasan, a practicing Muslim, is accused of opening fire at a deployment center at Fort Hood, Texas, on November 5, 2009. He is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder in the shooting at the sprawling Central Texas complex.

He faces the death penalty if convicted of murder. Hasan has grown a beard in preparation for his death, which he believes is "imminent," attorneys said.

Hasan's attorneys said the beard is an expression of his religious beliefs. Hasan has repeatedly been ordered removed from the courtroom because of the beard. He has been held in contempt of court five times and ordered to pay a $1,000 fine.

Last week, Gross appeared ready to order soldiers to forcibly shave Hasan, but the Court of Appeal for the Armed Forces halted the proceedings, saying it would decide whether Gross has the authority to compel Hasan to be clean-shaven.

The Court of Appeal previously rejected Hasan's request that he be granted a "religious accommodation" to wear a beard. Such an exemption has been granted to some men who follow the Sikh faith, which requires men to wear beards.

Clean Upholstery Stains with Whipped Detergent [Cleaning]

Clean Upholstery Stains with Whipped DetergentSpills on your couch can be difficult to spot clean and many people go to using expensive and harsh chemical cleaners. Before you resort to that, try removing the spot using dish detergent that's been whipped by a hand mixer.

Household weblog Apartment Therapy recommends using a manual hand mixer to whip dish detergent into a froth, rubbing the froth into your upholstery with a rag, and rising the whipped detergent out with water.

I know I don't have a manual hand mixer, so I tried mixing two tablespoons of liquid Dawn with our electric hand mixer on the lowest speed. It took around two minutes but the soap eventually turned into a rich froth.

The 2012 ACTE Asia Education Conference | Rice Communications ...

August has been such an eventful month for me so far, from joining Rice Communications to being able to attend the 2012 Asia Education Conference at Marina Bay Sands, a high profile event organized by the Association of Corporate Travel Executives (ACTE), only two weeks into my new job. Together with Donna, I had a chance to experience a two-day education and networking event with a lot of key players in various industries attending including American Airlines, British Airways, or Diners Club International, Hyatt Hotels & Resorts to BNP Baritas, Credit Suisse, Barclays, Accenture, IBM, and HP.

Picture1

The conference featured a series of educational sessions, networking lunches and cocktails. Around 450 delegates from 27 countries brought different perspectives and expertise to the event. These include corporate executives, human resource professionals, to hotel & travel management company representatives.

One of the sessions that I found very interesting and insightful was ?How mobile apps can enhance traveller experience and influence their behaviour?, which gathered experts from travel management companies and hotel representatives to mobile application developers. They talked about the increasing influence that mobile apps are having on individuals and organizations all around the world, particularly from a corporate travel perspective. Most of the mobile applications have been used by individuals to manage their own travelling, while organizations are still being cautious of integrating these apps into their travel management. As Mr. Bicky Carla, Group President of TraVision Holding pointed out, to some, the mobile applications world is still foreign; and the first experience can be quite uncomfortable and intimidating, just as when you are embracing a new language or a new culture. However, ?mobile apps are here to stay?, he said.
ACTE 2

Travellers around the world increasingly influenced by this new platform; and mobile applications are going to completely change their experience in the future. Ms. Cecilia Routledge, Asia Pacific Managing Director of Egencia, concluded the session with an interesting point that in my opinion is not only true in this case but it is also applicable to other industry as well: App developers as well as organizations who want to develop a mobile application for their services need to make sure they understand what the real needs are of the end buyers, what buyers are really looking for, and how these applications can really serve them and address their problems.

As a newbie, I was completely impressed with the whole experience. The team at ACTE did an exceptional job, from booking the venue to inviting outstanding keynote presenters and choosing relevant and interesting topics for the educational sessions. They had even collaborated with QuickMobile to create an ?ACTE Asia ?12? Application that hosted the conference agenda, speakers biography, sponsors and attendees? information, hotels options, and even some tips and hints of where to go and what to do in Singapore ? a perfect example of ?using mobile apps to enhance traveller experience and influence their behaviour?. The conference overall was a success, and as in the words of Mr. Kurt Knackstedt, Global Category Lead ? Travel and Expense Management, Global Sourcing ? Services, Rio Tinto, ?Business travel executives from around the region ? and the world came to this conference looking for new approaches to industry issues, and they did not leave disappointed.?

Targeted oxidation-blocker prevents secondary damage after traumatic brain injury, study suggests

ScienceDaily (Aug. 26, 2012) ? Treatment with an agent that blocks the oxidation of an important component of the mitochondrial membrane prevented the secondary damage of severe traumatic brain injury and preserved function that would otherwise have been impaired, according to a research team from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Graduate School of Public Health and Department of Chemistry in a report published online August 26 in Nature Neuroscience.

Annually, an estimated 1.7 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI) due to traffic accidents, falls, assaults and sports participation, said the study's senior author H?lya Bay?r, M.D., associate professor, Department of Critical Care Medicine, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. She added that 52,000 of those injured die, and 85,000 are left with significant disability.

"We don't yet have a specific therapy for TBI, but can provide only supportive care to try to ease symptoms," Dr. Bay?r said. "Our study drug shows promise as a neuroprotective agent that might help address this important public health problem."

For the study, the research team conducted a global assessment of all the phospholipids in rat brain cells. This revealed that damage from TBI was nonrandom and mostly involved cardiolipin, a phospholipid that is found in the membranes that form mitochondria, the cell's powerhouse. They noted that in the healthy animal, only 10 of the 190 cardiolipin species were modified by oxygen, but after a brain injury, the number of oxidized species rose many-fold.

The researchers then developed an agent, called XJB-5-131, which can cross the blood-brain barrier and prevent the oxidation of cardiolipin. Using an established research model of severe TBI, the agent or a placebo was injected into the bloodstream of rats five minutes and again 24 hours after head injury.

In the weeks that followed, treated animals performed akin to normal on tests of balance, agility and motor coordination, learning, and object recognition, while placebo-treated animals showed significant impairment. The results indicate that blocking cardiolipin oxidation by XJB-5-131 protected the brain from cell death.

"The primary head injury might not be that serious," Dr. Bay?r noted. "But that initial injury can set into motion secondary cellular and molecular events that cause more damage to the brain and that ultimately determine the outcome for the patient."

She added that a targeted oxidation-blocker might also be beneficial in the treatment of other neurological disorders, such as Parkinson's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or ALS, and stroke.

Birthplace of most European and West Asian languages traced to Turkey

Using methods borrowed from epidemiology, researchers have identified Anatolia, a peninsula that is now part of Turkey, as the origin of the major language families of Europe and West Asia.

By Wynne Parry,?LiveScience Senior Writer / August 24, 2012

Indo-European languages ??a category that includes most of the major languages of Europe and western Asia ? originated in what is now Turkey, between 8,000 and 9,500 years ago, say researchers.

English is one member of a large family, the Indo-European languages, that are now spoken by a huge swath of the world. But where they originated is the subject of controversy, with experts undecided between two areas of western Asia.

Borrowing a technique used to reconstruct family trees for viruses, an international research team has come down squarely on one side of the debate: Indo-European languages originated in Anatolia, a southwestern Asian peninsula that is now part of Turkey, between 8,000 and 9,500 years ago, and were carried, at least in part, by the spread of agriculture.

Other researchers maintain that Indo-European languages originated in the steppes north of the Caspian and Black seas 6,000 years ago and were spread by the semi-nomadic Kurgan people.

"These two theories have two different ages and homelands, and by tracing back in time using these methods to study viral outbreaks, we are able to test between the theories," Quentin Atkinson of the University of Auckland in New Zealand said in an audio interview released by the journal Science, in which the new research appears.

Instead of constructing a family tree by comparing the DNA of viruses, Atkinson and colleagues compared what are known as cognates, or words in different languages with the same origin. For instance, the English "mother" and the Spanish "madre" are cognates. [Original Language Sounded Like Yoda]

The researchers included about 20 extinct languages in their sample of 100 Indo-European languages; some of these extinct languages, such as Hittite, were spoken more than 3,000 years ago. These ancient languages helped the team look further back in time.

They looked to historical events, such as the breakup of the Roman Empire's language Latin into the Romance languages, to establish a time scale for the evolution of the Indo-European languages.?

They then used a statistical method to focus in on the family trees that best explained their data. The result strongly favors the Anatolian hypothesis, Atkinson said.

The spread of agriculture, either as new generations of farmers sought out new land or through the conversion of hunter-gatherers, was a mechanism that would explain the expansive spread of the languages in this family, according to the researchers, but they added that agriculture was probably not the sole driver of language spread. ?

The research is detailed in Friday's (Aug. 24) issue of the journal Science.
