The federal government is adding cancer to the list of illnesses covered under the Zadroga health care act.

Cancer originally was not covered by the program for first responders who became sick after the September 11th attacks.

Federal officials are now adding 50 types of cancer to the list following an outcry from 9/11 advocates.

Under the law, affected workers and residents are eligible for free treatment and payments from a re-opened victim compensation fund.

The program is named after James Zadroga, an NYPD officer who died of a respiratory disease that was later attributed to his participation in rescue and recovery operations at the World Trade Center site.
