NEW YORK (AP) ? The leader of a crime ring that combined pickpocketing, identity theft and costumes to steal more than $700,000 from banks is headed to prison for 9 to 18 years.
Arthur Franklin didn't speak at his sentencing Monday. The 47-year-old pleaded guilty in October to conspiracy, grand larceny and other charges.
The Manhattan district attorney's office says some conspirators stole victims' wallets. Then associates working at a Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, collection agency covertly tapped a credit database to get victims' personal information.
Prosecutors say other schemers then dressed up as the victims, posed as them at banks and withdrew thousands of dollars. Prosecutors say Franklin styled himself as a doctor and construction worker while keeping watch.
